From the Editor: February 2006
Was December 2005 the month when the Government finally woke up to the importance of the UK's marine industry? For those who weren't following the story at it happened on www.mbmclub.com, here's the news: the Treasury included in its pre-Budget report some positive comments on the future of red diesel. Although subject to an "initial regulatory impact assessment", the Government says it is "minded" to ask for the EU to extend the current derogation, which allows UK leisure boaters to use fuel taxed at a lower rate than roadside diesel. This is the best news we've had since MBM launched the Red Alert campaign 18 months ago. We've worked hard to raise awareness with the public and to educate MPs, as have the British Marine Federation and the Royal Yachting Association. Most significant of all, though, have been the efforts of MBM readers, from those who signed our petition to those who wrote to their MPs, and those who organised events and meetings in their areas. UK boaters are indebted to all those who campaigned for the cause - thank you to each and every one of you. Unfortunately, our efforts can't stop yet. Now we need to start all over again with our MEPs, who will be bargaining on our behalf with the EU. Look out for next month's issue, when we'll explain how you can help in the next phase of the fight. Enjoy the issue!
