Classic Channel Regatta - still some space
The first-ever Classic Channel Regatta - Dartmouth to Brittany to Guernsey and back, 8-17 July - has room for a few more boats thanks to the inevitable drop-outs. And there are some minor programme changes.
Bruce Thorogood, organiser of the event (also known as Le Challenge Classic de la Manche), writes on 18 June: "We have 63 confirmed entries coming to Dartmouth, plus quite a few more yachts who are still hoping to make it, and a good number of gaffers who will be joining the Rally for the weekend. For the Channel Race we have 53 confirmed entries, and a further 35 French boats will be joining in Perros-Guirec for the Perros Classics part of the regatta."
"At one stage, back in March, the pre-registrations were coming in so thick and fast that it looked as though the regatta might be over-subscribed, but things then settled down and a number of pre-registered yachts have dropped out - two owners have emigrated to New Zealand, a few boats' refits are running behind schedule (no surprise there!), a couple have been sold, and, of course, work is getting in the way for some. So, although we still have a really good number coming, if you have not confirmed and are still hoping to come - we still have room for you."
Two changes to the original programme are: as previously advised, the Perros Classics will be going to Treguier instead of Lezardrieux; and the start of the Channel Race is now scheduled for 16.30 on Sunday 10 July, not 13.00 as stated in the Notice of Race.
The Dartmouth Rally weekend includes, as well as the racing, a Friday evening Welcome Reception at the Royal Dart Yacht Club sponsored by Classic Boat magazine, followed by the Welcome Supper with 'musical entertainment' in the Old Market Square in Dartmouth.
On Saturday the prizegiving and prizes for the Start Bay Classics Race are being sponsored by Pusser's Rum, and that will be followed by the Grand Regatta Party in the Old Market Square with music by 'AlkaSalsa' - top UK salsa band who headlined the Brest Festival in 96; barbecue by Riverford Farm Foods - award winning local organic farm, and bar by Skinners Brewery - micro-brewery from Cornwall with a full range of real ales including their award winning Cornish Knocker and Betty Stoggs Ales, plus Classic Regatta - brewed specially for the regatta.
