£14 million for Chatham Historic Dockyard
Work has begun on a £14 million museum project at Chatham Historic Dockyard (CHD). The Number One Smithery building at the Chatham site will be restored for the venture, called National Museums at Chatham. The building will house educational facilities and more than 5,000 objects including ship models, as well as a model of P&O passenger liner SS Rawalpindi. Her story will be told from the different perspectives of CHD and its partners; National Maritime Museum, the Imperial War Museum and the Science Museum. So far, £2 million has been raised, with the balance to be completed over the next few years; fundraising will no doubt be aided by the celebrity of newly-embarked patron, Prince Charles.
