Cutty Sark: could have been worse
Damage to the Cutty Sark is not as bad as first feared. This was the opinion of Simon Beames, architect behind the Cutty Sark project, as he surveyed damage at the scene of this morning's fire aboard the Cutty Sark. Extensive damage has been caused to the ship's decks, but these are not original. It's thought that the original rock elm and teak that form the hull have escaped the worst of fire's ferocity. There are still fears, however, that the fire may have been hot enough to damage the wrought-iron frames that give the ship its shape. The Metropolitan Police has issued no statement further to their treatment of the fire as 'suspicious' which is standard procedure after any blaze. Ministers Tessa Jowell and David Lammy will be issuing a statement in the Commons later this afternoon. CB will update as further information becomes available.
