Ferry salvage operation makes progress

A salvage operation is under way for the ferry Riverdance, which ran aground in Blackpool on Thursday

A crane and other equipment are due to arrive from York today and an aerial surveillance flight by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) counter pollution aircraft yesterday reported no signs of pollution.

The plan is to lift equipment onto the ship and begin work on stabilizing her and lessening her list so that a safe working platform can be made. Once this has been achieved fuel oils will then be removed so Riverdance can be prepared for her removal from the beach.

The MCA is urging people to stay away from the ferry and the exclusion zone of 400 metres around the vessel.
