Jory to become first woman in top class of P1
Southampton's Shelley Jory will become the first woman to compete in the top class of the Powerboat P1 World Championship when the series kicks off in San Benedetto del Tronto in Italy on 9 May.
Jory, a previous winner of the Honda Formula 4-Stroke Series, is joining forces with American powerboat team Lucas Oil for the series, which will see her sitting alongside team owner and throttleman Nigel Hook in a 1400hp Mercury-powered Skater V399 Superboat.
The pair will compete in all 14 rounds of the P1 series in the Evolution Class, which will take her to Italy, France, Malta, Tunisia, Spain, Portugal and Bahrain.
Jory said: "I am delighted to have been signed by Nigel and the Lucas Oil team. I plan to capitalise on all I have learnt from the hot competition in the Honda Formula 4-Stroke series over the past four years. With Nigel's skill and confidence in the boat, I am positive we are the perfect team to go hunting for a world championship!"
