Teak is back on the market
A new source of teak from Sudan will become available to the marine industry this autumn, easing the pressure of demand on this valuable timber. Teak, which is only native to India, Burma and Thailand, has long been expensive, rare and frequently bound to political complexities in its countries of origin. It is now illegal to export it from India and Thailand, and, since November 2007, illegal to import it from the only exporting nation – Burma. Simon Kloos, of sole distributor C Leary, aims to sell the Sudanese plantation wood at a price similar to that of Burma teak before the current price spike. Full story in June CB.
