Classic Boat scoops last interview with Olin
The November issue of Classic Boat, on newsstands this Thursday 16 October, carries the last formal interview with one of the most prominent naval architects of the last century, Olin Stephens, who died on 13 September 13 this year, aged 100.

“Olin Stephens’ drawing table, at his NYC firm of Sparkman & Stephens saw the conception of lines of yachts as diverse as Dorade, a 52ft yawl which prompted a ticker-tape parade in New York after winning the 1931 Trans-Atlantic Race, and Ranger, a 135ft J-Class sloop that Stephens designed with Starling Burgess for the 1937 America’s Cup races,” says editor Dan Houston.

“He has a very special place in our readers’ hearts and yachtsmen the world over."

Classic Boat will be detailing Stephens' full achievements in this special cover feature, which also includes the magazine's exclusive interview by American correspondent Chris Museler – rewritten on hearing the sad news.

Dan added: “It is sad to hear of his passing, but at 100, Olin Stephens had a good innings and was seen, in his later years, as the world’s greatest living yacht designer, in the mould of Wm Fife, GL Watson, and Nathanael Herreshoff.

“It is only appropriate that a magazine which showcases the classics will be celebrating the life of Olin Stephens, who contributed so much to yacht design in his lifetime. We even have details of his last design, which he was working on this summer.”
