General Introduction.

Contest Yachts was founded in 1960, and grew to become one of the larger European production builders, with a wide range of cruising yachts built. Like many European builders, the company eventually concentrated on limited production of larger models, their current range starting at 42 ft and going up to 72 ft in length. Conyplex and Contests have always had a reputation for quality construction.

The original Contest 31 was designed for Conyplex by Uus van Essen, designer of the Flying Dutchman keelboat amongst other craft, including other larger Contest models.

About 110 Contest 31's were built from 1971 to 1974. The hull is by modern standards very traditional, and shares many characteristics with yachts such as the Rivals and Contessas. These boats are all moderately fast cruiser-racers, and today will still give a better account of themselves than most modern cruisers once the wind gets up.

The hull has an internal GRP head lining which is much easier to maintain and keep clean than vinyl linings.

In the heads a pull-out washbasin over the WC has a fold-up tap.

Accomodation

The Contest 31 has a remarkably spacious accommodation for up to 5/6 people.

The forecabin has has two full length berths, with shelves and lockers, whilst the passage way and toilet compartment can be divided to provide a dressing annex for either the foc'sle or saloon.

The Saloon itself has an 'L' Shaped settee which can be used either as a single berth, or with the table as a double. Opposite is another single settee berth. Both of these settees have folding leeboards for snug sleeping at sea. or can be widened for comfortable nights in port.

Aft of this area is a spacious galley to port with a chart table and quarter berth to starboard.

The interior is finished in mahogany with sapele veneers. The cabin sole is of solid iroko.

Hull, Deck and Keel

Fin and Skeg hull in GRP with secure deck sporting raised bulwarks for secure deck work.

The ballast is lead and encapsulated within the hull moulding thus ensuring no keel bolt issues.

The Contest 31 cockpit is one of the most attractive we have seen. With the 'T' shape at the rear with lifting teak slat seats to allow the helmsman the option of sitting or standing in optimum comfort. These also enhance access around the Wheel pedestal.

Exterior woodwork is teak.
