Classic Boat is the original and best British traditional boating magazine.
Every month we showcase the worlds most beautiful classic yachts and
traditionally designed workboats alongside a wealth of news, opinions and
reviews by the best writers in the business.
Classic boats are boats which endure. They get passed down through families
or taken on by enthusiasts who love the look and feel of these craft. They
are also enjoying a new found popularity and new designs are
being produced and built for sailors who dont want the trouble of
a long restoration.
CB covers boats of all sizes and type, from any era, and made from any material.
We are a photographically-led and design-led magazine taking inspiration
from, and providing inspiration for, all builders and users of beautiful
boats. We also try to dispel the myth that running an old wooden boat is
hugely time-and-money consuming.
The magazine started in 1987 and quickly acquired an international reputation
with its eclectic mix of traditional designs. It was soon perceived as a
catalogue on the whole repertoire of small boat architecture, and became
a journal to collect.
Since then the business of restoring old boats has become an industry, with
festivals all over the world staged just for classic boats. The magazine
reflects this and we try to highlight the huge variety of boats in this
category, and show readers the best way to restore and keep them.

Dan Houston - Editor since
June 2000
Dan joined CB as its deputy editor in 1998, after 12 years working on newspapers and magazines. A CB reader since January 1987 – after being given issue number 1 of the magazine by a newspaper colleague in East London – he is also a classic boat sailor.
He was taken sailing as an infant with his older brother aboard his parents' 30ft teak bermudan cutter Nereis. Later, aged 11, he was given a Mirror to look after and sailed Admiralty Sea Cutters and a Montague whaler among other boats with the Sea Cadets. Two of his early jobs were working on a trawler and then the schooner Vanessa Ann in the Caribbean. At other times he worked at a chandler and yacht broker before getting into journalism. In 1989 he acquired a 1953 Scarborough Sloop, Salote, which he kept with a partner for 12 years, sailing her variously on the East and South coasts.
Dan found Nereis again in 1999 and tried not to buy her for three years. She was a restoration project and he sold Salote and started work in his spare time. The plan is to have her sailing by next year. Dan teaches night school navigation at Hove as well as the odd practical sailing course in the Solent area.

Peter Smith - Art Editor
Peter joined Classic Boat as art editor in June 2001 and is responsible for the presentational style of the magazine. He previously worked on building and property titles but now gets to mix business with his first pleasure, which is sailing. Peter keeps his 1951 Gauntlet Bardu at Maldon on the East Coast and sails with his partner, daughter and recently born son. He has sailed since childhood and is variously one-time owner of a West Mersea Sprite and a Folkboat. Peter is the only obvious member of the team to have Viking blood - being six foot four and with red hair and beard.

Peter Willis – Production Editor
Peter joined the Classic Boat team in March 2005, having previously been an occasional contributor who earned his bread (and butter, in those days) in business journalism. As well as being responsible for all the mistakes, or lack of them, in the magazine, he edits some sections, notably Yard News, and contributes the odd article. He particularly values being involved in the heritage aspect of Classic Boat. He is the magazine’s resident Arthur Ransome fan (well, one of them, it seems), having set up a trust to preserve Ransome’s boat Nancy Blackett – original of the Goblin in We Didn’t Mean to Go to Sea. Started sailing on the Broads, has been to the Baltic and Brittany and of course Holland. and now sails mostly on the East Coast, though also enjoys the West Country, and is passionate about Portsmouth, his ancestral home. Likes books, beer, scenery, architecture, and, when he isn’t sailing, walking.

Steffan Meyric Hughes
- News Editor
Steffan started sailing toppers at the age of 10 on Bewl Water Reservoir in Kent, when it still contained water. After spending 10 years as a keen canoeist, including a spell training the SAS and SBS, he has decided to return to the slightly less hair-raising sport of sailing, and is now looking for a small wooden yacht.
