RNLI lifeguard Ben Parry, saved the life of a 13-year old girl yesterday afternoon (Monday) after she got into difficulty on Whitesands beach.

The charity’s lifeguard was in the sea advising two bodyboarders to move back between the red and yellow flags, when he spotted two girls from Bolton struggling to swim in 5-foot high waves.  After realising that one of the girls was fighting to keep her head above the surface level and disappearing under water, Ben swam over and using his rescue tube, brought her safely to shore.

RNLI lifeguard Ben, comments:

‘We had very powerful waves with a strong under tow current and the girl was struggling to stay afloat in the rough sea conditions. Luckily, despite swallowing a small amount of water and being in a state of shock, she needed no medical treatment.’

More than 100 of the charity’s lifeguards patrol 28 beaches in Wales. Last year in Pembrokeshire alone, RNLI lifeguards were involved in 509 incidents and assisted more than 561 people.

The lifeguards are due to perform a joint simulated rescue with St David’s RNLI all-weather lifeboat and Little Haven’s inshore lifeboat on Friday 31 July at 6.30pm on Newgale beach. Members of the public are invited to watch the charity’s lifeguards and lifeboats perform the exercise.
