A fisherman was airlifted to hospital when his hand was severed after being caught in ropes. He lost four fingers below the knuckle in the accident on Sunday morning.
The crew onboard Dutch beam trawler Artvelde raised the alarm 10 miles south of Shoreham.
Shoreham RNLI's all weather lifeboat was launched to respond, and stood by while the Coastguard helicopter took the man to the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton where he underwent surgery.
Shoreham lifeboat coxwain Peter Huxtable told BBC News:
"He caught his hand in his fishing gear and severed his hand so it was quite a nasty accident."
"It's not that common, but you do get accidents like that," he added. "It happens so quickly and it's very heavy gear on fishing boats of this size. It's a bad accident."

I think you will find that a Dutch Beam trawler is a type of vessel, not necessarily one belonging to a fisherman from Holland!

What is a Dutch Beam Trawler doing fishing 10 miles south of Shoreham? No wonder we have so few English fishing boats left!
