Written in 1836 I (don't) recall. "Masterman Ready" is also a good read tho' it is "Peter Simple" that could claim to be the first novel of seas and ships in the Napoleonic style - all based on Marryatt's naval career of course.
Sadly it was "Children of the New Forest" that was read to me in my cot. Which must account for summat!
Merry Christmas

Children of the New Forest - an excellent story for the younger reader combining an adventure, and providing a feel for a difficult period in our country's history
