there maybe a chance that we buy our first boat for use on the thames, privately direct from the seller.
Being all new to this, I am aware that certain paperwork would need to be dealt with. Could anyone confirm the full list of things I need to do paperwork wise, and also were I can download any required forms.
Is it proof of VAT paid?
Bill of sale?

The RYA site will provide you with a Bill of Sale which you can do with the Vendor. If you intend taking the boat abroad it is vital that you have the original VAT invoice to prove to some officious Froggy that VAT is paid.
Of course you should take every step to ensure the boat is free of all encumbrances. Other than that it's as easy as buying a car. From what you have said previously I doubt if the craft you are buying is Part 1 registered so there's no need to deal with the Ministry of Shipping in Cardiff.
