Can be found at the southern tip of Lake Windermere. Moorings available for £25, which is offset against hotel services. Dinner (£40pp) in the 3 Rosettes main restaurant exceeded expectations. Good flavours without being over rich (i.e. you couldn't still taste the dinner you had two days ago).

Ruskins brasserie (£25pp) also excellent. Superb fishcakes (always a good way to judge a restaurant) and lovely home made chips.

Also a new £1.3m leisure club with pool, jacuzzi, steam room, saunas, massages, etc.

Ads you drive away from the Lakeside, towards Ambleside (north), another hotel catches your eye on the other side of the road. It has a large temporary sign outside which says

"WARNING - THE ONLY VIEW YOU GET FROM THE LAKESIDE HOTEL IS THE VIEW OF ITS OWN SMELLY SCEPTIC TANK!!"

Competitive capitalism in action, eh?

Surely you mean sceptical tank, or more likely septic tank?

Can't say that I saw any septic (or sceptical) tanks from my suite unless they were referring to Windermere itself, which is perhaps a little harsh, even with the current 'stinker activity'.

ahem. I bow to your expert west-country knowledge of these matters! Must have been septic, unless it was full of doubts...or it might have said sewage tank. Or is that sewerage?

Yes - the sign has been up a while, I saw it up at least a couple of months ago if not longer. Maybe it will be on TV ? Neighbours from Hell or similar....

In about 1990 went for hols aboard a Holidays Afloat hire boat (Broom 30) and ended up at that end of the lake for a meal. We ate in the place opposite the Lakeside Hotel and had a very good meal indeed. I also remember going down the feeder stream at the end in the tender and not being able to row back due to the current! Guy with dinghy & outboard towed us for a £5! And also going to lift the anchor and finding it trapped under the rails, eventualy got it free.
Is the resturant still there?

"west-country knowledge" Might be wrong but I thought Windermere was just North of Accrington??

No one can force me to come here-----------

I'm a west country boy (Cotswolds/Glos/Cheltenham)who visited my sister in Acky and went on to stay at Windermere where I met Matt.
