I have decided to go to Heybridge Basin for 3 days this week to do a little quiet boat fixing. I will need a lunchtime pub, and preferably a decent steakhouse restaurant, although failing that anything that is good.
many thanks brethren.....

Ahem

I believe the catering on Full Circle has worldwide renown.

Why do you feel the need for outside caterers?

Perhaps trying to curry favour with the locals ? /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Seriously though /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif Al Jones lives in the Heybridge Basin area so would probably be a good one to contact /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Hi Jim!

I live in the Basin! About 150m from the sea lock.

Bottom pub, the Jolly Sailor, basic good food.

The top pub, The Old Ship, better menu.

Trip up to Maldon to Malone's, or you can choose from any of the many restaurants in the town. Clint at CRS Marine will run you up there in his boat on the tide if you cross his palm with silver!! Taxi back though.

Get touch when your here, Dave (Trevera has my numbers), and I'll grab a pint with you!!

Regards

Al.

We had a very pleasant meal indeed at The Old Ship 8 days ago. Ensure your diction is good though - the steak we ordered arrived at the table as skate! The Greene King IPA was right on song, and slipped down as smoothly as good Adnams.

When you come around the stabd can at the entrance to the lock keep the 'withies' about eight-to-ten feet on your pt side, the 'gut way' leading up to the Dolphins has a slight 'S' shape to be aware of.

I highly recommend that you contact Colin Edmund, (01621-Oops! I think that may have been their personal number! It's in the Almanac anyway, or chl 80), the Lock Keeper, at least two days before your intended arrival!!!

We have a few Dutch boats in at the mo, so be aware I think they are off on Sat. They are on the left as you enter the Canal.

I would prep both sides of your boat as you come in as you may get 'Told' to secure on either side in the lock. I'll try and be there for locking in on Thursday to catch your lines.

See you then mate,

Al.

Thats great Al, thanks for the info. I will give the Lockie a bell tomorrow morning.
We can take the ground anywhere so its not critical to hit Heybridge, but in 20 years, I have never been in there.

Lets know how you get on, have thought about stoppin in the basin but having seen the run up at low water its like threading the eye of a needle. Not sure i like the idea of rafting 4 deep in there either to much of the black stuff in the watering hole could be fatal.

I went for the first time by boat last year. The entrance is nothing to be concerned about at all on a rising tide. As Al says keep the withies to Port. Excelant BBQ area, good pub and an interesting place. I found that the lock keeper does not comunicate much once he has opened the lock. As soon as any departing boats have left you need to go in. If you are not carefull other boats arriving after you will just push in front of you and if it is late you could get left outside! Tollesbury is also worth a visit if you are in the area.
