Minehead

Just back from a trip over to Minehead. I took some pictures of the obstructions marked by posts outside the harbour. The local fishing boats go inside but without local knowledge I allways go outside the posts.

In the fresh breeze this morning the surf breaking over the gables reef made it obvious where it was lurking.Lots of people have left the harbour and set off to the east only to come to a shuddering halt /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif,It pays to head out to the north a good way before heading east if for example you were going to Watchet or Burnham.

Cracking sail back today beam reach all the way,left Minehead at 2pm and locked in to Cardiff at 5.15

The Waverley and the Balmoral don't have probs when visiting. But then, the info is there in pilot book and chart . .

Funny how things remind you.....i havn't been to minehead for atleast 7 years. In the last boat the battery failed so ended up with a taxi delivering a new one!
Ilfracombe always reminds me once your in you tend to get stuck for a few days.
Passages from Swansea have always been rough.
Passages from Bristol i normally feel rough!

I've never "done" Minehead. I like the comforts of a marina too much I suppose. It looks as though it dries to hard sand. Perhaps it's yet another venue to add to my "To Go To.." list. Been sailing in the Channel for 10 years and I still have lots of places to visit.

Theres some muddy areas in amongst the sand so if thinking of drying on legs have a good poke around where the legs will be resting.

The problem we have with minehead is that theres a big magnet in watchet that seems to draw our boat towards the marina ,the hot showers and handy pontoons/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif.

Your "battery in a taxi" reminded me off walking miles to find a garage in Burnham on Sea to get some cans of petrol.On the way back we spotted the lan d train that carries daytrippers up and down the prom.They wouldnt let us on with petrol cans so we had to get some supermarket bags to disguise them first. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

never really been keen on Minehead - its not really a harbour so much as a stone wall. very exposed.

Dead battery, that's nothing! I took a taxi to get a crankshaft for a 4107 during one holiday cruise and rebuilt the engine on the pontoon in Ramsgate!

Definitely to be avoided in an Easterly.

My old pilot book says its ok in N through West to SSE. Personally to be on the safe side I would modify that to NW through W to S .

Even in a Nwly a bit of swell affects the outer moorings which could have you banging down on hard sand but tucked further in its fine.
