View Full Version : Any Suggestions - NW Scotland
Any Suggestions welcomed - we are planning a first time cruise in Scotland - Oban, Craboh, Mull, Islay, Jura (probably). Where are the best places to eat & drink?
Drinking anywhere. Food, take your own!
Behave yourself!
Some of the finest seafood in the world! That's why most of it is exported. But whilst up there, you can sample some of the best oysters (loch fynne) scampi, lobster, crab, mussels, herring, makerel and scallops. Restaurants, I don't know, just used to stop almost anywhere and ask the harbourmaster/barman etc. What else do you want, salmon, venison, pheasant, angus steaks, highland lamb, take your pick! Load of tosh talked about British food and Scots' in particular.
Depends really if you have kids, last time we chartered a yacht on the west coast of Scotland we found they are persona non grata in most places after 8:00 clock. Had to resort to an Indian meal in Rothesay one evening as it was the only place that would let us and the kids in! Little 'un still hates smell of curry!
Crinan Hotel at Crinan - very expensive restaurant but best bar meals we have ever had anywhere.
Pub/Restaurant at Craobh marina. Good seafood , service "interesting" when we last called in. Think it pays to order early in the evening.
Tobermory - couple of good pubs for food.
If you manage to get to Col the hotel at Arinagour also did excellent food when we called.
Substitute cook your own for take your own.
Spent a lot of time up there, have we? It's a pity you didn't find the right places. I've even found good places to eat in Falmouth.
Wide Mouth Frog at Dunstaffnage marina (Oban) does excellent food. Can get v busy at times. The pub at Tobemory that is a must do I think is called the "mish nish"

Take an Ordinance Survey Map and land where there is an Inn or Hotel within a couple of miles of the anchorage.
Did this first about 15 years ago in Loch Sunart (on the North side opposite the main anchorage behind the islands) and walked to the Glen Borrowdale Hotel in the rain wearing oilies. Despite the fact that the house rule was jacket and tie, they tooka our oilies tot he boiler house (to dry not burn!) and sectioned off part of the dining room so the guests couldnt see were were improperly dressed and then prodiuced the most amazing meal for a very reasonable price.
Never looked back.
Theres a pub near a v popular anchorage S of Oban called something like "Pulldubrian" which was good this summer, as was the Loch Melfort Hotel, (although the pub at Croabh is well spoken of).
Good luck.

Nice restaurant in Melfort. They have special early booking times for children.

Tayvalllich Inn is nice at the top of Loch Sween and is fine for kids too I think, lovely anchorage too although at a dead end
Craighouse on Jura has a pub worth drinking in (aren't they all though but the bay there is lovely, not sure re kids)
Crinan is a bit stuffy I think!
Tigh Na Truish on Seil is good too - great atmos - #
Loch Melfort good too
Port Appin has the Peirhouse which is excellent
Mishnish is legendary!
We did a cruise there last year and eat and drank very very well and I have worked in quite a few of the west coast places in my student days and I think the standard of food on the west coast is a lot better than some may think - would heartily recommend the book Scotland The Best by Peter Irvine as a guide to where to eat/good for kids etc.
Loch Nevis, Knoydart. Claims to be the most remote pub in mainland Britain - only accessible by boat. Spectacular scenery, and a free mooring buoy if you eat in the pub. The seafood is truly excellent and the cheeseboard will finish your arteries off for sure.

Agreed.
I recall being asked what size lobster I wanted. I hadn't a clue so asked for the same weight as one I had in Nova Scotia a couple of years before.
Hardly fair, but the Loch Melfort came up with a plate with three of the beasts.
Yum, yum.

Just back from Croabh where the Lord of the Isles Pub/restaurant has recently been taken over by I believe two of the ex staff/managers. Food was excellent with a wide choice but especially good seafood.

McGonachs, the pub near the dinghy pontoon in Tobermory, was doing a superb barbecue - proper job, cooked over wood - last week for a very reasonable price - absolutely delicious.

McGochans is the place. Best pub food in Tobermory. Mish has lost the place. Wouldn't eat there again. Very dissapointed and seems to be using up all past glories.
