I have just bought a small suitcase generator (600 watts) and am told it will not run a conventional battery charger. Is this type of generator better suited to switch mode chargers?

it should run a small normal charger without too much trouble.

remember that at 600w you don't want to draw more than about 2 amps continuous from the charger, so keep your charger small.
