View Full Version : I wish to propose a Curry Night in London.

Brick Lane, of course.
Thursday evening after work, say 6pm?
How about late November, early December?
Anyone got a favoured venue?
Sounds like a spiffing idea.
I'm no expert on Brick Lane curry houses so I'll leave it to someone better informed.
Notwithstanding the above, a google for Brick Lane Curry House brings up a site which suggests that the Aladin (http://www.aladinbricklane.co.uk/)is very good, but that could all be trickery :) Looks like no drink license, but there is an offie four doors down.....
But I'll go with the flow.

Make mine a pint of Cobra.
PS - the Kahari near Hounslow West tube is extremely genuine. Sikh, not Bangladeshi. Not so used to seeing a bunch of pissed-up whities having a night on the Vindaloo, though.

hmmm ... snigger/smirk ... i'll stagger along efter a hard day wi' ma neb tae the grindstone ...

Ooh, this is proving popular with the Village Elders.
Ken's left field suggestion of Hounslow West is intriguing, but I think more choice in Brick Lane, and chance to own our very own brown paper bags to carry hooch into the foodery. Marvellous.
Thunderbird Wine anyone?
I'm in - the only problem is likely to be finding a curry house big enough :)

Having done a bit of snuffling round, it seems that Aladin has more recommenders than naysayeers.
And no license,so Brown paper Bag carry in.
Carry in? Sounds counter intuitive somehow.
Only if I have to :D - yep count me in.
Would very much like to come. Just need to find a way to justify a 2-hour journey each way !
Put me down as 50/50.
Dependent on date a definite maybe from me.
Probably a bit far for me unless I had a London meeting which is rare, or I took the afternoon off.

So with no licence we are allowed to bring our own booze? Or this supposition?

Nope, it is encouraged. You will have to pay corkage, so not economic to bring Chateau Bilgex 2010 with you.
Thursday evenings are actually not good for me (I am commited every Thursday evening until May) but I could make an exception depending on the exact date.

I am proposing the Thursday, 26th November.
Far enough away from Xmas not to be too crowded.
Any violent objections?
Ahem
YES
26th is friday :D
Are you sure you don't mean 25th?
It's Thanksgiving, but we should be OK unless the Expat. Turkey Curry Posse are on an East End mission :D
(Edit: Beaten by M. Troisbouteilles :))
Maybe - it depends...
My daughter had a play on for a month in Brick Lane and the cast sampled all the curry houses along there. It was a couple of year ago, but I'll ask her to recommend the best that they found.
FullCircle
23-09-10, 13:43
OK he's right dammit.
25th November.
Now, here's the thing:
Aladin website says 20% discount for 4 or more after 6.00pm. Great, and they have a private room that can cater for up to 50.
or
Buy a packet of McCoys Crisps and get a free main meal curry on a BOGOF basis, but Aladin isn;t a participating restaurant, but there are FIFTEEN in Brick Lane that are....
As a matter of record, there are loads of participating Indian restaurants for this deal right round the country.....
Every time I come back to this room I have to reset the sort options to show the most recent threads/replies.
Is there a way to do set it permanently?

Pretty sure you won't have to pay corkage. As they don't have a drinks license it would be a bit cheeky to charge you for bringing your own booze when there's no alternative......
Regards,
Wino of Winchester
If it's anything like the Lahore kebab houses there's no corkage.
From the website:
Discount vouchers available on request for all customers should you wish to purchase your own alcohol from the local off-license. There is no corkage charge

If I'm allowed to arrive late, which is very fashionable I gather, can I come too? Will be coming back to London from Dorset but won't be able to get there before 18.30-19.00. Would plan to start drinking on the train so as not to be too far behind you all on my arrival.:):)

Any suggestions for the local pub to meet in?
In terms of Pubs - depends a bit how people are getting there. Most that I know are on the other side of commercial road
e.g.
The Golden Heart (sic) on the corner of Commercial Road and Hanbury Street - I've not been in there and it may get a bit crowded
The Water Poet on Folgate Street
The Gun on Brushfield Street
A little further away, Dirty Dicks on Bishopsgate; and dozens more in that sort of area.
Difficult to make any specific recommendation - I suspect they will all be pretty crowded at that time on a Thursday evening just a month before Christmas.

Sorry for anyone who did not get there, you really missed out.
So glad to see Mrs jimi, Mrs PH, and partic Vanilla, who is the star of the evening.
I left with a wonderful feeling weaving back to Liverpool St.
I will remember all oaths of allegiance and promisory notes of crewdom to foreign climes.
Thank you all so much for making my day.
Great do, Jim; it was particularly cunning of you to lay on the free beer.

Anyway, a big thank you to Full Circle for getting us all together. There's nothing like a quiet night out is there - and this one was nothing like a quiet night out!
