More advice required please - would it be better/possible to shorten a mast than to alter a setup from deck tabernacle mounting to one where the foot of the mast replaces a compression post.

A mast is much stronger if it is keel stepped rather than deck stepped. If a craft is designed to use a particular section of mast when keel stepped then if changing to deck stepped a heavier mast section should be used to give the same safety margins.
