Hello, As a follow on from a pub discussion can anyone advise what qualifications the small work boat and diving support skippers have.

We have a 10m workboat servicing our moorings (doing a great job) and just wondered the back ground of the skipper who seems highly skilled ?

Thanks

Hi

He will probably have a RYA Coastal Yachtmaster, Offshore Yachtmaster or similar.

Could just have a boatmans certificate, issued by the Harbourmaster. Cheap and easy.

Covers you for carrying people to the harbour limits, which can be extensive.

P'raps he has loads of experience.

Just read this post so thought I'd reply as I have the required Quals for the above.

As of January 2005 you are required to have a Workboat Skippers Certificate Category 3(entitlement to skipper an 80' workboat with a maximum of 12 passengers upto 30 miles from a safe haven anywhere around the UK coast).

This consists of having a Dayskipper Theory certificate and a commercially endorsed Advanced Powerboat Certificate.

For the commercial endorsement you also need to have a medical certificate ML5, First Aid Certificate and a Sea Survival Certificate.

As a futher note for Cat 2(60miles offshore) and Cat 1(150miles offshore) you need to have a Yachtmaster offshore certificate with commercial endorsemnet.

For a Cat 0(300miles offshore) you need to have a Yachtmaster Ocean Certificate with commercial endorsement.

Hope this answers your question.

" and Cat 1(150miles offshore) you need to have a Yachtmaster offshore certificate with commercial endorsemnet.

For a Cat 0(300miles offshore) you need to have a Yachtmaster Ocean Certificate with commercial endorsement."

For both these, you need an ENG1 medical certificate (ML5 is only valid up to 60 Nm from a safe haven).

PS Anyone know of any jobs for Boatmaster Grade 1 (+ all the above YM Ocean comm end etc)?
