I'm off to Palma on Wednesday 14th September for a week or so. Thinking about hosting a gathering of forumites onboard Magnum. Who, if anyone is around during this time. If you smell please do not respond. SWMBO's welcome as long as they know their place. Otherwise post away.

No chance I will ever make it across The Pond. But I would like to hear the translation of "SWMBO"?

Kelly,

"SWMBO" is a term of endearment that we gentlemen in the British boating fraternity give to the lady who lights up our lives.
It means She Who Must Be Obeyed /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

When Magnum says "SWMBO's welcome as long as they know their place" then for a woman at the meeting to say "Can I get you all another round of drinks?" is perfectly acceptable whereas "Would you like to give up your seat so I can sit down?" is not.

Sounds about right Steve /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Good one! Over here one of the phrases for "wife" is "Admiral".

I believe the origin of SWMBO was the author John Mortimer's character, Horace Rumpole in Rumpole of the Bailey.

The books were made into a TV series - http://www.tvheaven.ca/rumpole.htm - starring the late Leo Mckern who, incidentally was Australian.

Blimey, I'm sure I'd had a bath that month. Lucky you, out there again when you've only just come back. SWMBO has pinched only free weekend between now and half term for a girlie weekend on my boat. Can you believe that? What the hell are they going to get up to?
