I am looking for the meaning of the flags on a souvenier hat from the QE-2. The flags are flying stem to stern over the vessel and reading fore to aft are, 4597. I believe they are some form of Cunard line ID. Can anyone offer any info?

I cannot be definative on the signals you mention but can tell you that a four flag hoist (message) is usually used to signal the name of a ship, a geographical position or even a course being steered. Does this help?

I seem to remember an article many years ago suggesting that this was the number given in the shipyard before the ship was named.
