Magna Carter has intimated that he is feeling lonely, and would wish to commune with his fellow East Coasters.
It is therefore proposed that a late season weekend meeting for the 7th-8th October at West Mersea should see us all into the Winter.
Current eating venue suggested is the Company Shed, but how about a specially laid table or three in the WMYC. It looks to be a nice venue, and they serve real beer too.
Replies for numbers below if you wish. Be delighted to see you all again.
Full Circle is in then.

Dave, feel free to join us on Full Circle for the night. If you can make it the weekend, come down on the Saturday morning to Burnham, and be delivered back to Burnham Sunday.
Or just join us at West Mersea. There are a fair few B&Bs , but not much in the way of taxis post bar!
Great stuff thanks , although it will be both me and Louise , we'll leave the kittens behind though , are you sure ? .

I am serious, and dont call me Sure(ly).
Did you want to do the whole trip, or just the Saturday Evening?
That will be great, we will have the Staff make up the aft stateroom.
I do hope you aren't vegetarian or teetotal.
Excellent thanks Jim , we'll be aiming at the trip too , but as we're both complete novices when it comes to rag and stick it could be a little shaky . She's now decided to bring her shopping trip forward , new outfits and deck shoes first , first ? , we haven't even got life jackets and she wants a new outfit
Oh and definately not veggie , and we'll bring a 24 pack or two , that's for me /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Dave,
providing you are not 8 foot tall and 25 stone, You will be able to both squeeze into our spare oilies. We have 150n lifejackets with hoods and crotch thingies and harnesses.
I can say that we did a race in f6- f7 rising f8 yesterday, and did not take a drop of water over the side. We are not expecting to go out in such weather, the car would be a better option then!
You will be pleased to learn that we successfully took 2 virgin sailors out racing this week, and they both had a gas. Thats two more converts from fishing boats to sailing.
Bring red wine. Or beer, but no Yellow EuroBurp.
Suggest jumpers/fleeces may also be wise..... the heating works well in the boat, but the cockpit is a different matter. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Trust you two to be so disingenuous.
Belgium is not part of Europe, thats why they put the Euro HQ on neutral ground.
Beers of fine provenance such as Duvel are exempted from EuroBurp classification. Think Stella, or Finkbrau or other dumpies......
Oh yes, and I have some Duvel on FC for those of conspicuous consumption habit. So thats you two then.

I have today booked a table for 14 adults and 6 kids at 7pm on Saturday 7th October at West Mersea YC.
They have a function on that night, and are between Chefs, so....
They will let us know if:-
1) we are offered to join or be offered the same menu as the function
2) the normal Menu
3) Imported Fish & Chips or similar to the Club.
Will keep you all informed when they ring back
I also rang Jeff the Boatman, and he confirmed that 6 or 8 boats would not likely cause an issue at that time of the season.
No problem with draft of 2.1m (Mr Guapa & Mr Sailorman) Plenty of room nearer for my mudplugger then!
High tide is 12.57 and is Springs ish. Suggest getting to shore by 5pm in the boat or your dinghy, as it dries out on big tides near the pontoon for an hour or so.
Bar is open all day.....
Returning to boats wont be an issue except you will be against the tide.
Anymore?

Not being a regular visitor to West Mersea, where eaxctly are we going?
Is it anchoring, or buoys?
(not that I mind either way, just thought it would be nice to be on the same side of the island as everyone else - you may disagree... /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif)
FullCircle
04-09-06, 20:28
Its on buoys, and............................................... ...................... its free. So is the water taxi I think, but I never used it.
From the Bench Head bouy proceed to the Nass beacon. The Mersea quarters are reached from the Nass by a well marked channel. At all states of the tide we recommend that you follow the lines of moorings as this clearly indicates where the deep water is. Visitor moorings are usually available for an over night stay - contact our senior launchman Jeff Wass on Marina Channel 37, the call sign is YC1 or on mobile number 07752 309435.
Sorry to butt in on your thread but, having recently visited WMYC in a boat drawing 2m we did run aground quite comprehensively in the 'well marked channel'. IIRC it got deeper once we were inside the moorings. Sorry but can't remember what state of tide it was.
Might be worth asking for some up to date info from a 'local'.

Colin
So true, and part of the charm
I ran aground in my Wetline dinghy some 20 feet from my moored boat in 4.3m of water, just at the bifurcation of the channels. Stay close to the local boat line trots, even when they are only yards apart.
Arent you coming along then? All welcome and 'butting in' not a recognised term?
Jim
'butting in' not a recognised term /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

So, we all set then?

And, according to Neil's blog, you've been indulging in Euroburp (Duvel) - still any left, or do I have to bring my own? /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif
I have set aside a crate for the WE - but I feel I owe at least a "few" to sailorman for the fabulous pictures he took of Guapa under sail on Saturday. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif
ooops... just been told off this weekend for looking at wedding forums instead of YBW. Anyway, we'll be there on Vreny assuming the weather looks ok as we're a bit nervous about WM in a blow after our experience at the begining of the season..... handy hints for newbies to West Mersea - don't moor next to the big red fishing boat (we woke up just in time to fend Vreny off it, and to find it's nets under us!)

26-09-06, 08:48
Guys, a quick peek suggests we'll be leaving Ipswich about 07h00....
OK, will check tides & streams at the weekend and set time to leave Woolverstone. If we are meeting at 1700, we will need to be there 1500-1530 latest. Shouldn't be a prob, but we must be careful as this is the weekend of the very high/low spring tides (20cm below CD i think!) So low tide entry not advisable, + streams off colne bar etc v. Strong then.
I think HW is somewhere around 1200-1300 ish but will check.
Phoenix of Hamble
26-09-06, 08:58
Exactly, 07h00 (ish) departure sees us out of the Orwell with on the very last of the ebb with a fair tide down to the Blackwater, arriving a couple of hours before HW...... must do my tidal height cals then if its such a big tide.... don't want to get back from the YC to find my boat laying on its side alongside the mooring!
truantagain
26-09-06, 09:18
Speaking of low tides I must remember not to arrive back at Woolverstone bang on low tide. I did that a few weeks ago on the big tides and went aground trying to get in to my berth. It was of course as great excuse to sit back, have a gin and tonic and wait for more water.

This is a superb fish cafe, no license, just mentioned to make Vrenys' mouth water, slobber, slobber. Hee hee.
And just to inform the Belgaphiles that FC is now cleared out of Duvel. I have however, a goodly ballast in the midships hold, a variety of English Ale. We also have a huge transfer of Stella to make to the Stella, Vreny. A residue from last weekend, which I fear will need drinking up soon.
I like the idea of a Barmitzvah. Anyone of suitable age care to donate their body parts for this one? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Looking forward to seeing you all.
Who cares what the tides are like, I motored up to Harwich and back last weekend, against wind and tide, both ways. This season has been my worst ever for diesel consumption. I think I will re-engine to a 1GM at a pint an hour.

Hi All,
Have just spoken with my colleague at work. Apparently the Coast Inn WAS the one to go for but it has gone downhill recently and the only place now worth going to is the Titash Restaurant (Indian). Full Circle has this in the take away section but it is a sit down restaurant too! hmmm... anybody not like Curry?????
Sorry , that would be me , pain in the butt I know
ok, in which case apparently the Coast Inn is the next best bet!
Sorry to be a pain , but certain foods have undesirable effects , but it's not just down to me alone , if everyone else wants curry that's fair enough
Curry's not the best for my healthy eating either so probably better at the Coast Inn. Also apparently they do seafood platters there for those that can't make the company shed.

Please dont all jump the gun here. We still have a nominal reservation at WMYC. The alternatives are in case we need to consider other things. They havent phoned me today, but I am ever hopeful.
The WMYC is probably the best choice, as we can spend as much or as little time there as we like, there is a garden and the beach for kids to separate themselves from the parents, and we will be under no commercial pressures to keep spending once we have filled our gobs. We are also on their moorings for nowt, so it would be polite to at least go and say thank you.

With much regret Guapa will have to chuck in the towel.
As it turns it, I will be on duty on Sunday.
We could make it if we drove over on Saturday just for the meal, a chat & a few pints. But with me a few pints always turn into some & a lot of. So I don't fancy the long drive back to civilisation and the 6 o'clock wake-up call on Sunday.
As next WE will be a boatless WE we will have to confide ourselves to some local pottering on the Orwell/Stour on Saturday.

Just looking at the weather forecast for tomorrow morning and I'm not too sure that I'm going to be able to convince my better half to leave the berth if it's blowing the foreacst 6's to 8's.
Will check the forecast again this evening and see if blows through quicker than expected. If it doesn't we might need to cancel.
Can I call you on your mobile this evening to confirm?

Grant,
If it looks really nasty, we're going to head over to West Mersea in the car.....
Be a shame to miss out on a good evening...
Jim & Neil, thanks for all your efforts, but the weather looks like it might get the better of us as well.
SWMBO is not happy about the weather that is predicted, and we have 2 semi/non sailing friends with us this weekend, and it would be wrong to subject them to a 4-5 hour passage in 7's & 8's.
We will make a final decision tonight when on the boat with the latest weather info.
This is a real shame as we were really looking forward to meeting forum peeps.
If this blows through tonight, we will be there.
I will call you on the mobile tonight.
Please let me know if there is a "cancellation fee" as the Coast wanted a £5 head deposit. Let me know if there is anything to pay, and I will call them with card details.

Hi Neil
Unfortunately going by car would not be an option for us - it's more to do with the baby and getting her down at a reasonable time. If we were going by boat I probably would haev taken baby and mom back to the boat quite early and boy and dad would have come back for ice-cream and beer, and just to make sure I get that the right way - that's ice cream for my boy and the beer for me :-)
I'll give Jim or you a call this evening.

Strange... Jim was on a handheld too....
I could also hear Cento calling from Walton Backwaters when we were approaching West Mersea...
As others have already said , an excellent weekend and many thanks from Louise and me for the hospitality of Jim and Lynne . I'll let Jim give all the technical details but I'm very pleased to report that he let me helm Full Circle all the way from just clear of West Mersea , through to the Crouch , crossing that narrow bit of shallows motor sailing and not on auto pilot . We then went into the crouch under sail and I'm chuffed to bits because we went past the mooring and a fair way up the Crouch before I carried out my first ever gybe to bring her round and back up towards the moorings . Then had to execute a couple of tacks and some avoidance and , oh I could go on all day , but eventually I managed to take her straight to her mooring which we got onto first time .
Sorry to ramble , but thanks Jim for an excellent weekends sailing , we are both firmly hooked and looking forward to more learning and hopefully getting our own small yacht .
Excellent weekend and look forward to the winter sailing meet when an appropriate venue is found .
I'll post pics when I can find the cable , but Neil , can you e mail that high res one to me please , it looks stunning

Went to the boat Friday night and looked over the sea wall. Hmm. Not good. Pontoon was virtually out of the water. Low tide? I should say so! Looking at the lumpiness and the wind, coupled with the generally poor seaworthiness of my GRP tender, Lynn was unhappy for me to row out the 20 minutes or so, against a 2-3 knot tide. Yep, good call. So we went to the pub with Mr Engines Dunn(recommended bloke for boat engine stuff in Burnham), phoned Mr & Mrs Trevera25, who were, well, late-ish.
We had a couple of pints, and got hungry waiting, so we popped off to the kebab house. Mr & Mrs T arrived just as Lynn & Engines came tottering out of the Kebab house with 4 tons of slatted sheep under the arm. We repaired back to the pub and sat outside while we consumed the sheep and put greasy fingerprints over the pint glasses. A couple of pints later, we headed back to the Brick/Mortar Full Circle HQ, and were rewarded with a huge box of choccies for Lynn and a pint of 10 year old Scotch diesel for me, ahem. Welcome Mr & Mrs T!
Lynn had to go to work, so retired earlyish, and we fell into bed at 0345. Hic.
Up and breakfasted by 9, we returned to the boat, lit it all up, had a safety briefing (for the Forum Police record), jackets on and headed into the huge tide of 3.5kts.
We rolled out the genny, going dead downwind with up to 30 kts of breeze up the chuff. A very creditable 8.82kts recorded on the log, averaging 7.5kts right out to the Ray Sand. A bit twisty with the wave motion, but less wave height than I expected.
At this point, the echo sounder head failed. Another triumph of Navman 3100 LCD technology. That completes the set. Wind, Speed and Depth are now all wonky. So, a first for me, we crossed the Ray Sand with no depth info. As it was only 1.5 hours before HT, I knew we would be OK, as the keel was safely tucked up in FCs nether regions, so we only draw 1m.
Wouldn’t you know it, the wind went forward and down to F4 then, so we motor sailed the northerly bit. Then contacted sailorman and Magna Carter on the HH. All travelling OK.
Mr M Carter reported that sailorman (single handed) had come past him off Clacton with 1 reef in the main and full genny at 90MPH and 75 degrees of heel. A slight exaggeration.
Heard some chump calling Thames Coastguard for a tow off the Mersea Flats as he had managed to stick a deep keel boat on the putty on a rapidly falling tide while engaged on other things. Rising note of panic as the Coastguard kept calm, trying to take notes, and with the other hand scrambling the ILB out of Mersea to tow him off.
Our roving reporter, Vreny and the soon to be Mr Vreny were photographing Coast Road Mersea when the ILB crew came ploughing up the submerged road in a 4x4 to get to someone needing a tow off Mersea Flats. We on FC applied Warp Factor 10 to go to assist, reaching our customary 7.9kts under motor. How exciting!
Then came the disappointment – the boat, with some skill had managed to get itself off the putty using genoa pinned in, steering it round downwind and thrashing the poor donk. It is believed that this may have been a forumite, who has since put the Coastguard telephone number in his phone, allegedly.
Arrived at St Peters point and saw Magna Carter motor sailing against the ebbing tide. Flat out doing 2.8kts. We throttled back off the plane and joined them in the leisurely last leg into Mersea. We all moored in Salcott Creek, the sun came out, and we converged on FC for really well deserved few beers/wines/lemonades before heading to West Mersea YC for a chotapeg before going to the Coast Inn. Mrs Full Circle and Vreny went off into a corner to plan visits to wedding exhibitions, while we were wondering what happened to Squidge & Family. No show apparently, which was a shame as we would be charged full bifta for their pre ordered meal. The assembled party shrugged – c’est la vie! A good show of character I thought.
Toddled along to the Coast Inn, got shown to our table – and there was the Squidge Family, waiting there, wondering where the rest of us had got to! Had a really good meal, will go back anytime.
During the meal, the famous Forum Pig came out, see photos, and it was revealed that it was I, Full Circle, who had purchased Trevera25s ? on ebay last week and I had been stringing him along with a series of emails to wind him up. Oh, how we laughed!
Health Warning!!!!!
There are no commercial opportunities to purchase fags or cigars on the West Mersea front. Much panic amongst the gaspers in the party when they realised how perilously low they had allowed their stock to deteriorate.
Anyway, with much bonhomie, we all got in our dinghies and travelled the mile or so back down the creek to our moorings. Mr Magna C knocked on the hull early as he had been despatched to get fags on Sunday morning. I mean, how hard can it be to find a Newsagents? He returned a wiser and sadder man about 40 minutes later, result – no fags!
We all left Mersea and had a lovely sail, but the winfd went Southerly just as I turned South onto Dengie. It is probably the last time we will see Magna Carter, and I waved a quick goodbye. So we motor sailed all the way until we turn West again to go into the Crouch.
We had a really good sail in F5 SW, just cracked off and hitting 7.5 kts average. Trevera25 at the helm, and for a first time, doing very well indeed. As he said, we gybed round at Bridgemarsh, Island as the tide would be turning in a few minutes, and then took the first off the ebb back 3 miles to our mooring. Mr T took the instructions very well and neatly split wind and tide elements to put us right onto the mooring buoy first time. He was chuffed. Couple of beers in Royal Corinthian, and the weekend was laid to rest.
Brilliant weekend, thanks for all the company, sparkling wit and repartee.
Hi All , Thanks Jim for organising a great evening we enjoyed good food(huge helpings) and great company. It was fun putting faces to names and hearing the tales of windy woe. Then again if i had sailed round i would have got out of a day of back breaking digging in the garden on Sunday, nowonder i am happy aboard a boat!
PS Nice try but sorry dont want a Seal 22 ! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Much clearer than looking at these on the camera , any chance of other pics showing a normal tide because that canoeist would be on the road normally

The piss up sounds promising, but i'm afraid you've missed the opportunity to take Maggie's tiller. She has been sold, and final payment taken today. Her replacement will have a wheel.... so you'll have to settle for showing me your 'far from perfect helming' with that instead... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
If you are desperate to play with a tiller we have one on Sirenia.
We hope to have her on a swinging mooring somewhere on the East Coast next year.
I am sure that we could allow you a go.

As to this spammer: how do unregistered users get to post in the first place?
link @ the bottom l/h of browser cunningly noted "contact us " /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
at bottom of every single post is something called 'post extras' with 4 icons to right of it. If you rest your cursor on each of them, you'll find one of them is notify moderator. Makes it easier to report an individual post, rather than contact us
phew , I thought for a minute I was going to have to pretend I know what I'm doing
