In the next 6 months I will be sailing in the area between Gibraltar and the Balearics. Can anyone suggest how to obtain reliable weather forcasts by radio or the internet, preferably in English though I can struggle through Spanish

Thanks

The US Navy has a useful site at www.nemoc.navy.mil
Look under "VALUE ADDED FORECASTS" - for FSME (Forecast Surface Mediterranean)

www.weatheronline.co.uk great forecasts, all the wind vectors, everything, just done the same trip, navtex is reliable aswell and the spanish shore stations transmit on 16, then transfer to the nearest station channel, some are in spanish, but not difficult to translate.

Look at SmartMet at www.smartcomsoftware.com (http://www.smartcomsoftware.com) to download GRIB forecasts, satellite images and current weather reports

Spam, my registered email can't send from the boat, so can someone else report the post please? (all previous posts similar).

Between Gib and the Balearics, the most reliable source is the Spanish Met Office. The Spanish is very easy. They do issue the same forecasts on VHF, with an announcement on Ch16. I won't give you a direct link as it will almost certainly have changed in six months....but use the local met offices as your primary source......they know the local areas.

I reckon it'll be ok till late sept.
Seriously, sat phone or ssb grib files if you don't go ashore much.
