Evening all, hopefully some of the forum experts can shine some light on a problem im having with my D2 airtronic heater.

On the last couple of times ive used the heater, the unit has been switched on and starts up normally with no issues. The heater will then continue to run, slow down and eventually cut out when the boat is upto temperature - all as per normally.

After a period of time, the boat cools and the thermostat calls for the heater to restart, but all that happens is the fan spins up to full speed, and stays like it, just recirculating the air. Switching the control off stops the heater as it should, but when the heater is restarted, the fan spins up to full speed, but the heater never attually performs an actual startup attempt. If i leave the heater to cool right down, the above senerio is repeated - normal start followed by this problem.

Anyone got any clues before removing it and hitting it with a large hammer?

Regards
Alex

From their maps, Vodafone 3G coverage of the Scottish west coast seems non-existent away from the Clyde, and quite limited even there. The ordinary 'phone ( GSM ? ) coverage seems quite good however.
Am I correct in thinking that a 3G dongle reverts to GSM in the absence of a broadband signal? If so, what is the speed likely to be?
I'm looking for occasional, limited, use without a contract.

The raw water intake pump on my boat is, I think, a Cleghorn 1/2" with the intake and outlet opposite each other, ie inline, the pump is a small bronze type with two slotted mounting legs and a belt pully.
I need to move the whole pump and alter the mounting set up which would mean having to find a very similar pump but with the intake and outlet facing the same way as each other from the pump body so the pump can be sited closer to the engine.
Now I have been searching for such a pump but can not find any.
Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Green Genoa - is white sunstrip a problem?

Removing my genoa on laying up this year I found it has taken on a greenish hue thanks to the flourishing growth of algae in a strip one or two feet wide down the leech and along the foot.

In 30 years of sailing I have never had this before - black mould ocassionally yes but green algal bloom never.

I wonder if it is a weather thing (wet autumn)?

Or did I just roll the sail up rain-wetted or fail to roll it tight enough to keep out the light that green algae would require to thrive??

Or is it because I have a white sacrificial sunstrip?

On all previous roller sails I've had dark coloured strips but on this relatively new genoa I specified white. And I wonder if more light penetrates the inner layers of the rolled sail as a result.

Has anyone else found their sails have gone green?

Dear all,

my electronic sort out continues. I have quite a new raymarine 2000 auto pilot which works well. Aboard my boat when I bought it was also an old analogue style autohelm 1000. (the very old one with the compass dial you turn to set course). It was in bits when I found it. I thought i'd try to repair it as a spare. I quickly found why it was in pieces - a wire had fallen off the motor. I have re soldered it and put it back together. The only question remains over a pulley, spring and line that was apparently rigged inside the unit. It works without it, but periodically overruns in one direction or an other, and has to be stripped and manually wound over. I can only assume that this internal rigging applied some sort of load that was electronically detected and prevented such overrun. I have been unable to source an exploded diagram from raytheon and would be very grateful if anybody out there knows how this should be set up either from working on one or inadvertantly seeing the insides of their unit. It certainly seems a shame to sling it when a bit of string and a spring properly applied could render it useable as a spare...

thanks in advance for any information.

The hour meter on our Volvo tacho has died, called into the Volvo dealers and given the advice to take it out and put in the airing cupboard to dry out.

Now I have heard of this before but does it work?

Volvo teccy tells me they have always had the same problem with the hour meters for years!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I shrug my shoulders, is this another fault like leaking landrover windows that is impossible to find a cure.

Rant over

The cork decking on my cockpit seats is looking decidedly shabby. It is smooth cork sheeting, maybe 2mm thick. Has anyone any idea if this is still available?
Otherwise any better ideas? I want something which won't tear the a*** out of my trousers. Also needs to be a DIY job to fit within a low budget.

This is what it looked like a few years ago... it is now chipped around the edges and there are a couple of holes in the middle.
