Just a heads up for anyone with the above. The bolts that secure the face plate(the part you remove to check/change the impeller) are too short. This can cause the threads to be stripped out on replacing them. This happened on my 2 year old engine (using the correct torque), luckily still under warranty. Volvo have replaced the pump but the new one suffers the same problem. I will replace such bolts with longer ones as the housing is threaded it's full depth. If the same happens out of warranty you will need to heli-coil the casing or drill out to a larger size and re-tap. To avoid the problem I suggest you replace the short bolts with longer ones.
The stars go right to the horizon- It's like being inside a kids snow globe. Got a fairly slow connection that keeps dropping out so sorry for the short post. Enjoy photos. will try to update later.
...

I was interested to read the piece on gensets in this months MB&Y as I have been looking at installing such a beast for the past couple of years.

The issue for me was that formally these units were frankly rather too large / took up too much space in my size of boat. Certainly that was the case with the factory fitted generators.

New technology has allowed decent power outputs to be produced from smaller, rather compact gensets. Thus I looked at the main players Onan, Mastervolt, Panda, and Puguro etc etc. The cost of the genset was always the big ticket and $ , € forex issues played their part in me delaying until now, ‘local’ costs are in fact quite high too covering ‘quiet kits’ , skin fittings and of course the installation/commissioning.
All up these things are the price of a small car forchristsake!

Thus at SIBS I bit the € forex bullet and gave up on it weakening in the near future
(sure sign it will fall like a stone now )and I was able to arrange a supply, fit and commission deal with, oddly, Advance Yacht Systems who get mentioned in the magazine article.

These guys are the importers/distributers of Paguro and as well as being very nice people to deal with; have a terrific selection of retro fit photos from which to judge their work. The product knowledge also impressed. The arrangement was extremely flexible as all I needed was a fixed lumpsum price and have the thing operational by Easter 2010 when the long anchoring sessions re-commence.

As luck would have it the unit was installed during the 1st week of November and was commissioned early this week after a lift out, shower, shave and blow dry.

I’m delighted with the installation job – absolutely first class.

So, now I will be able to run all the nice items a la marina – oven, nespresso machine etc whilst charging batteries and heating the water.

Here are a couple of pix. You can see the unit has a built in sump pump and has its own starting handle in case its own dedicated battery falls flat. They have done a nice job with the control panel (which before was quite ugly) – the cherry will darken over time I’m told…..The LED load indication is great and this unit is of the type that can accept higher than quoted Kw for shortish periods without overload/overheat auto shut down. Certainly on test I was able to run oven, kettle etc.

The Honda suitcase jobbie has done us proud until now but I was getting fed up hauling it in and out of the laz and awaiting cries of protest when used in quiet spots!
It’s a lot of money but does enhance the boat loads and I would definitely spec one in any future newbuild.

I have been in ctc with several others on here about generators and would like to hear news of their experiences, usage et al?

Sea trials.

A good friend of mine is purchasing a boat of 220k stature, he has paid his deposit, as the boats already in the water the sea trial will be carried...

A good friend of mine is purchasing a boat of 220k stature, he has paid his deposit, as the boats already in the water the sea trial will be carried out first then if all is ok the boat will be lifted for survey shortly after.

Here is another brokers/dealers question.

He is buying from a well known dealer, its not a stock boat but is being brokered by the dealer, he is having to pay a separate skipper to take him on his sea trial, surely the dealer should be doing this as part of his side of selling the boat(and making his 8%).

The dealers excuses for not demonstrating the boat is on non insurance grounds???
The owner is not available to demonstate this either, however I see it that,

The owner/seller is paying the dealer to sell the boat, parts of that sale is to demonstate the boat to the buyer, so why should the buyer be paying for someone else to do this and why isnt the dealer insured to do this in the first place.

I have placed this post after reading the long thread on buying and its debate as to who is responsible for matters arising from a sale/purchase, and what do these brokers do for there money both to buyer and seller.

I certainly would walk away from any purchase if it be 10k or 200k if I had to pay to see its ok at sea.

Whats your views on this? has anyone else had to pay separate, I came across this a few months back when asked to accompany a buyer on a sea trial, I presumed as I knew the broker he would be driving the boat, but no a delivery skipper turned up, when i saw the cash handed over for an hours work, I was to say the least amazed.

No doubt im going to get some flack about all skippers costs/insurances etc and no doubt your quite right, im fully insured but its back to the agent/dealer/broker where this post arises!.

What ever happened to management running companies for the benefit of their shareholders? Big fancy offices, no new deals and then they slowly slip away. I hope all the staff are Ok.
