I have got what could become a serious problem with the steel floor bolts used in my boat. Starting from the outside of the hull (toward the bow) I have mahogany planks on oak frames several of which are overlaid with steel floors on the inside. Hot dipped galvanized bolts clamp the plank, frame and floors from the outside in. Unfortunately the mahogany in the vicinity of the bolts is turning black leading to replacement of two planks so far. I am now going to remove all of the bolts and replace them with ?????????

There seems to be some sort of reaction going on between the mahogany and the bolts. The oak frames are completely untouched. The floors look fine, but the planks? well.

Can someone advise me on what sort of bolts I need. I have read some articles about silicon bronze but I may be failing to understand the matter.

I look forward to your response.

The fuel tanks in my Levi Settimo Velo are constructed out of plywood and grp. I should think they are mid 60's vintage, very similar to the tank construction described for Surfury in Levi's book Dhows and Deltas.

I lifted the inspection covers this afternoon to check the inside of the tanks. They are constructed with 3 baffles and appear to be basically sound. They drain from the bottom aft corner, so could gavity feed.

I will need to raise the cockpit floor to remove them for any further inspection. However, I do not know if the sides of the hull have been used to form one wall of the tank. Is this likely?

What is the modern thinking on fuel (petrol) tank construction? Would they stand up to current survey standards, or meet requirements for insurance purposes?

I will also post this on the Motor Boat Forum.

Having the repairs below the waterline sorted much earlier than I expected (See this thread), I'm turning my attention to the one other soft area I have found on Athaena. Unfortunately, my budget for boatbuilders is now spent so I will have to do this work myself.

A previous owner had applied a bead of bathroom sealant in the forecabin to stop water coming into the cabin down the sides of the samson post. Unfortunately that sealant did exactly what you would expect and trapped water in the gap between the post and deck.

I've explored round the samson post and having poked through the surface, there's pretty much a void where the plywood should have been.

Outside the area is covered by the bowsprit and samson post. Here's an overview of the foredeck taken when I was buying the boat...

Poking around today revealed the void comes right through...

Everything other than the ply and the immediate area of the samson post seems sound. Obviously the samson post is rather important, so I plan to replace it. It is stepped on the keel/stem. The thinking at the moment is to take out the post and cut back to good wood all round.

The deck teak seems fine so I had planned to do this from below and epoxy in new wood. Then fit a new oak samson post. However, I now think I'm only going to be sure of cleaning out all the bad wood by attacking it from above, that means the foredeck needs to come off. Aside from a couple of pieces I will need to cut, there seems to be a convenient join in most of the teak deck strips so lifting it is simplified a little. Once the deck is up I hope I will be able to remove all of the bad ply.

Any comments or advice as always gratefully received :D

at the moment the teak is attached to the ply locker lids by way of screws from underneath, the ply is mostly rotten so i will replace it with new,
I have been advised a better way is to drill through the teak and ply and bolt them together hiding the heads of the bolts underneath plugs,

where would i get a decent set of plug cutters?

I posted similar in the PBO but it was suggested that here was a better place.

I have a 27 1/2 foot Honeybee yacht of mahogony carvel construction with teak deck. It is a lovely wee boat and I have been very pleased with it since purchase this summer. It was a little neglected and needs some work. I like working with wood and am handy enough. I built a new tiller (when the first gave way (rot)) and have just completed a teak 3 leaf table for down below.

We have got it out and transported to our yard where it sits awaiting attention. I am getting busy with nitromors to remove all hull paint. I am thinking ahead to what I am going to do when i am down to wood.

It is a 50 year old boat so there will be a few blemishes and probably small amounts of rot. Does anyone have any hints and tips about how to go about things.

I intend to coat with epiphanes paint using a roller and tipping. Prior to this do I need to scrape out the caulking, do I need to hoke out any 'soft' wood? Should I treat the timber with something? What would be the best thing to replace caulking and fill in any defects.

I have lots of queries about how you would check keel bolts also and if removing them is always required.

Sorry for long post but I thought i would give you the background. I may get my technologically feeble brain round to posting pics if i can work out how. Any advice on any aspect would be more than welcome.

Thanks in advance,
Paddy

Hello, This is first ever forum and first ever boat project!!!
I have attached some pictures of my lovely boat, my project was to restore her, BUT it is look more like rebuilding her.
I am looking and hoping for any advice I can get from my pictures, I am keeping a personnel diary of pics, costs, hours etc so I will be asking lots of questions, some might seem silly or basic to you but I want to do it right.
My first lot of questions follows below, nautical phrases will follow as I learn more.
1. Where the hell do I start?
2. I am getting scared as I have found 3 rotten planks deep down the hull, will this be a problem to replace?
3. What is the best wood to use for different jobs like planks? if I make new ribs laminated what wood is best?
4. From the pictures what angle do I start? replacing the planks? stripping the inside varnish? or other?
5. This project could take me about a year with my work etc and I want to do it right, so how do I work with the wood drying out? what is the best glues, do I leave a allowance for swelling etc?

I am going to take some pictures of the supports I am using and if you could let me know if this is ok, as I do not want to damage or twist the hull.

The gentleman that sold me this boat, owned her for 35 years and I promised him to do it justice! so please help, I have bought all the books etc and been round boats most of my life but I just feel a little bit lost at the moment.

I look forward to hearing everyones veiws and advice.
Many thanks in advance
Steve
