I thought that us Brits would be anally retentive when it comes to talking about such matters but I didn't realise the rest of you were going to be quite so chatty as well.

This discussion on holding tanks and grey water tanks must have broken the record by now... 3,227 viewings and 88 sad buggers have written in (yes me included).... come on let's have a rest for a while until someone has go some real and up to date "FACTS", on the situation in Turkey for next year, to work with.

I have a good stock of old "vets gloves" (yes the one for cows) if any one is interested, invaluable when you are shoulder deep through the poo tank inspection hatch trying to clear a blockage.

Was that a collective sigh of relief I just heard or is someone going to pick up the gauntlett yet again

Probably replace the lot. Will have Aerogen/solar flowing in together with the alternators and biggest one on the out side is the windlass.

We were at anchor a few years ago in Sardinia during daylight hours with 30-40 kt winds. An AWB 36' dragged down on us and caused some damage, we never received any compensation from the Italian skipper or his insurers.

In Greece this year the same thing happened although I was on a friend's 80' Maxi. With the help of the owner we secured the 50' charter catamaran alongside with plenty of fenders, and told the skipper that he was not going anywhere until we had all his details and the port police had been onboard and made out a report. We left the boat that afternoon and went back aboard our boat.

I just received some thanks from my friend as he was holding a cheque for Euro 8,000.00 that covered the costs of the repairs to his teak capping rail anchor roller and gel coat repairs.

The moral of the story if you are ever unfortunate enough to be in this situation. Don't let them get away and always until you have all the details, take lots of pictures and involve the local authorities.

The yacht is in the south of France & she will only be sailed in the Med. so that lets out all the dark colours,. what do you guys think is a good colour to have her finished in?
My first choice would have been a very light blue - but the guys down at the yard said that it is not a seviceable colour for the med. Looking at the blue tone white!

Any one have any experience with Awlgrip? comments?

Just a quick 'thank you' for what became a pretty informative thread. It's obvious that just living here requires a degree of street wisdom I've not had since my youth; but I'm absorbing these lessons quickly.

It's fairly obvious from the responses that boat crime hasn't been seen as a quick and lucrative return. This could be because we either live on our craft and therefore have a chance of protecting them, or because craft in marinas are seen as a daysail pleasure thing which don't offer rich pickings and an easy return of the type the thugs want.

Something to think about though is whether it is wise to leave the red duster flying over the stern. This is equivalent to the foreign number plate...

From the point of view of my article however it's obviously a non-starter; but again, thanks for responding.

Cheers, Dave

I plan to fit some solar panels (2 x 80-90W each) and was thinking about which type of regulator.

From what I have read, these "MPPT" regulators are especially useful when panels are used in conditions of low to moderate sun exposure, as they recover some of the panels output which would otherwise be very very low.

Our boat will probably be in sunny places. As at the price of one of these MPPT regulators I could almost buy an additional panel, are they really worth installing when panels are supposed to get a lot of sun exposure ?

Also, is there anyone having replaced a "normal" regulator with an MPPT type one ? What was the increase in output ?

thanks
