In Praise of ICS 6 Plus Navtex system.. Superb
      #1836211 - 24/04/2008 18:45

Just a note to say, after testing the new ICS 6 Plus Navtex system.. it is absolutely the dong's dangly bits !

After using the Nasa, (A great little machine in its own right), it simply is night and day.. so clear, easy to read, large screen, dual freq simultaneous reception, pc - plotter output etc etc..
As an NMEA instrument repeater it is also simply excellent, the choice of screens and layout is amazing.. auto log book entries with print facility..

really blown away by this little wonder..

Sell yer granny and get one if you want the best navtex around..

GPS input auto selects the appropriate stations even (if you want it to, and why not ?)

Joe

Totally agree, great bit of kit. We got one from a good deal with McMurdo at a boat show. And we were able to keep granny. Never regretted it. Reception can vary, depending where you are. For example at low water in Bradwell marina, not a lot! Currently in Badalona we get Algeria and some French stations. Have heard mixed views about the optional aerial extension improving reception or otherwise.

Hi Sam
Havent tried the extention.. but it looks simple to make one.. a small ss bolt of the right thread with a piece of ss rod tack welded in.. will get the welder out...

Mind you, I dont have lots of room left for antennas lol..
Got the 23 foot whip for ssb.. an inverted V dipole.. 3 vhf antennas.. 2 wifi antennas.. Discone.. Quadrifilar Helix for WX sat reception .. 2 gps antenna - so, I s'pose a short whip on the sensor aint gonna be a worry lol.

I've got an old car radio marked 'Vauxhall Motors' and a bit of dangly wire up the backstay. Works a treat, I got classic FM, 3 days out from the Lizard.

Morgana! even my boat is faster than that..

Capt; you are a plonker, I don't have to means to get on the internet at sea!!

Outward bound from Falmouth to Cape St Vincent and on to Portimao last trip I got reception on my old radio until 3 days out. I only kept it because it came out of an old Vauxhall Cresta I once had. It still works though (It's marked radio Luxemburg too... bet you remember that.)

I used a Nav6+ for 5 years in the Med. Initially suffered variable reception but this improved greatly when I connected the ground/drain wire from the antenna to the keel to get a good RF ground. Most of the time I operated without the whip but eventually left it on as I found it did help in marginal conditions. However, the grounding is the real secret.

Back in Aus now we don't have Navtex so I was tempted to sell it on e-bay but I like the data display and logging too much to part with it.
