Just found this on U Tube... Have even more explicit footage! We were one of 5 liveaboards there at the time. On the wall where the first shots are taken. Believe me this footage was taken AFTER the main storm passed through!! Scary, the worst we've ever experienced. 36 hours of over 100knts. Try it sometime! We had people commenting about 'putting out to sea' etc. & 'we heard it was rough & water was coming over the sea wall'! We pointed out that coming over the sea wall was from the Inside!!! If anyone is interested I'll try to get the shots together to post but I'm not very technologically gifted!

Geez, glad I wasn't there! When did that happen? Oh, and since I know that marina: those sailing boats seem moored on the outer wall. If so, isn't the wind actually blowing from SE rather than NE?

Hi, You may want to think about that!
The wind is blowing from the NE the main harbour wall is to the south. When were you there? The Perfect Storm was 13th - 15th November 2004.

Welcome to the Adriatic! It's odd the boats were blown over; that smacks a little of incompetence. We always have the bows pointing NE, anchor and chain on the ground and sometimes extra reinforcement to hold the boat still. After all, these winds will blow through at least two or three times each winter for two or more days (although not usually exceeding 80 knots or so). In the Velebit channel, the fishermen apparently have their own special mask: a bucket with two eyeholes to enable them to breathe when the wind whips up the surface of the sea. I have my own boat moored upwind of a concrete jetty; there are three very robust warps linked to chain on the seabed to stop me being blown back against it, but even so, anything that creates windage comes off for the winter! In this bora of November 2004, we clocked 101 knots here in town. All mopeds were grounded and I was in my car (a heavy Subaru at the time) wandering who was shaking it. All the road signs were jiving too! But it only made a short mention on the local news.

This Bora nicknamed 'The Perfect Storm' was indeed unusual. The boat by the travel lift was literally lifted out of her cradle. A domino effect happened when the big aluminium boat tried to 'take off' and the cradle broke. At Split Airport they were tying the planes down. Wind speed recorded on the island of Pag was 245 Kms (not sure of the conversion but around 130knots). We still think Croatia is brillient!

Ok, I understood from your post that this happened recently. In 2004 I was still cruising the Adriatic, and yes, I heard about that unbelievable wind speed in Pag. Luckily my boat was far from there...

Perfect clip to understand - what is Bora. 2 or 3 times yearly, during winter, it blows with a force of hurricane 3 to 4. During March it blows at 7. , 17. and 27. ( as old people says) very strongly. During summer sometimes it blows with force 9 (40 to 50 kts). BUT MORE DANGER WIND DURING WINTER IS "JUGO" - SOUTH WEST WIND AS IT MAKE BIG WAVES ( max. wave measured on the oil platform in North Adriatic was 11 m as Pilot says!) Off course , if you respect sea and forecast, such strong wind is predictable and it is not difficult to avoid danger situation. By the way, Marina Kastela is situated on the direct force of Bora from Klis region and I should not leave my boat there during winter months. http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=q-WhHtQ3k30&feature=related

Thanks for that branko. This storm was forecast as a strong Bura it was, in fact, much worse than anticipated. Yes the Bura funnels through the Kliss valley. In 2004 Marina Kastella was still under construction and as you know finding places for the winter in Croatia, even then, was not easy. I agree, the Jugo is fearsome but M.Kastella is protected from that direction!
Respecting the sea and forecast is indeed a sailors number one priority, but in the situation of 13-15th Nov 2004 there was no way out!
