what is the best free e-mail system to adopt when travelling , having regard to system capacity and availability etc ?

Yahoo has a new web interface which is very good (drag and drop etc) been using it for years - great.
Also got a hotmail account - again livemail now allows drag and drop so its just like using MS Outlook.
Both excellent and seem to have effective spam filters.

I have my own email address with my own incoming mail server but I use Gmail (Google mail) to act as my outgoing mail server. That way I have a seperate back-up of all my sent emails. Excellent spam filter. Last time I tried Livemail I found it a bit clunky whilst using on a marina wi-fi network, but it had just been launched. I'm sure it's improved somewhat.
You could also consider using Thunderbird. You install it on your machine like a normal email client (a la MS Outlook). Then when you don't have internet access on your laptop you can replicate Thunderbird and its contents on a memory stick, go into an internet cafe, plug it in and use as if you were on your own computer. When you're done, you save and unplug, plug back into your laptop and it syncronises.

Just a note on Hotmail
MANY companies still dump hotmail emails due to excessive spam problems (Unfairly imho as the main problems were a few years ago)
So, really would avoid that one.. gmail, yahoo etc.. no real worries.
Interesting thoughts above on yahoos new interface.. personally I prefer the old one.. but each to their own.

Gmail hands down - I've been using it since 2004 (beta period). I have 2gb's of space used, 6gb free and over 12,500 emails. I route all my mail through them for their spam filtering - Their 'basic' html interface is good too, for when you're on those sketchy WIFI links in the middle of nowhere, just trying to see if anyone wrote you.
(Unfortunately) I don't work for Google.
