Be careful out there
      #1811135 - 04/04/2008 14:08

Collision last night - been told - off Padstow - motor boat ran into barge being towed by vessel - some injury to one crew - taken off by Appledore lifeboat in the early a.m.

Collision regs! No doubt will be MAIB involvement

Lets hope not to serious an injury, does anyone actually know, without looking it up, what lights the towing vessel and barge should be showing?
I don't have a clue, just wondered if peeps really do know their lights to that extent?

Even on the most basic course I always teach them that one of the few lights that really matter are the two or three white lights of the tug. In general you know to avoid big boats but the tug is a special case because you can easily be deceived into trying to pass between the tug and the towed vessel because the latter looks to be miles astern when seen close by at night.

So yes - everyone should know the basic lights. If you dont, then dont go out at night.

Looks to me Tangomoon, as if you have a customer for your courses

Getting older, wisely, has taught me not to trust my memory or the wife's. We see a peculiar arrangement of lights, we look it up. First we treat it as a tow 'cos they're dangerous then we watch carefully. We also operate by the West Indian collision regs 'De bigger boat has de right of way'. We have been in what we perceived as a dire situation last year when lights we could see were confusing to say the least. Had us on deck ready for the worste!

Apparently it was in the fog so lights were a bit dim! A motor boat made it inpossible to hear any fog signals. No doubt MAIB will be involved so get the full SP then.

And hey! He's was a fully passed out pupil of yours!

No - cant possibly be. My pupils know it all. How could it be otherwise?
