I have recommended "Narrow Dog to Carcassonne" to several people in the past - the story of Terry Darlington, his wife and their whippet crossing the Channel (in their narrowboat) and going down to Carcassonne through the French canal system.
This book is the sequel, and follows their trip down the Intracoastal waterway of the US East Coast (they shipped the barge over, this time). Also highly recommended. Like the previous book, it's not really a reference guide for those wanting to do the trip, more a quirky view of the people and places encountered on the way. However, there's still plenty of information about the route and it would make good background reading for anyone planning to navigate the ICW.
Terry Darlington is a witty and urbane man and he writes beautifully in a sort of relaxed "narrative stream of consciousness" style. Recommended.
