Merlin Rockets
      #190717 - 30/01/2002 00:41

Hi there,

I'm currently refurbishing an old merlin rocket, but could do with some help making up a new transom.

Does anyone know of a friendly boatbuilder/carpenter in the London (UK) area who would be up for taking on such a small job?

Any help would be great!

cheers

Dear Hen,

Replacing a transom on an old Merlin Rocket is not a small job and definitely not a cheap one. I would recommend you contacted a specialist boat builder who could advise and give you some idea of the cost. Why not try Brett Dingwall, top dinghy boatbuiler who lives just off the M25 at St Albans. Telephone 01923 854670.

Good luck

Holts used to build boats at Strand on the Green, close by the North side of Kew Bridge. Are they still there?

There are also a bunch of boat repairers in the area around Brentford lock/docks. Might be worth a poke around there.

Plus some really excellent rowboat and skiff people further upstream - Shepperton way. Can't remember any names though.

Trying to replace a transom on a clinker-built hull will prove a tricky undertaking unless you know what you're doing. As Sue mentioned, a boat builder would be your best bet,, there are plenty out there, but good ones tend to be very busy.

Alternatively you could buy my bargain Merlin 3373 which is in great shape and wants a new home .... Oh well, worth a try!
