Kestrel Mast
      #1866228 - 20/05/2008 21:34

I was supposed to go Gosport tomorrow to look at a 22ft Kestrel clinker yacht , Unfortunately , When they were lowering the mast it snapped . How expensive is it to repair ( If I can find someone to do it ) or buy a wooden mast .

Nick is a specialist in this sort of repair - should be able to help you if you give him a call.

The seller has found a "replacement " Mast but it's 8.53 metres and alloy with a 12Ft boom .The wooden mast is 8 metres . I don't think this is suitable , Beside its eating into the money I knew I had to spend .
What does the Panel think .

Depends whether the old spar is repairable, or how much it will cost to set up the 'new' spar correctly. Either way this could be expensive as the rigging will almost certainly have to be replaced to make the new mast fit. That would cost hundreds of ££'s

Sounds as if the owner is still wanting the original asking price even though he has done a great deal of damage to his boat. You went to view a boat in full working order, but it is now badly damaged and needing a lot of money to put it right even if he can supply a new mast. Either he puts the rig back into working order, or drops the price to reflect the cost to you of doing the repairs. Otherwise you walk away - theres plenty more boats looking for new owners without the work, cost and hassle of a broken one!

You wouldnt pay the same price for a car if it was damaged in an accident just before you bought it!
