Avatars
      #1375720 - 07/03/2007 18:10

I'm tried pms which didn't seem to work, so I'm hoping the forum might be able to help me out.
I'm trying to use an Avatar stored at the following location
http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/davelawsonuk/small_skinny.gif

The ybw site doesn't seem to accept this when I try to specify this via >User Options>Edit profile

The gif is less than 80 x 80 pixels but is about 28k in size.

Any ideas why it's not being accepted?

Seems to work alright, are you sure you are puting it into the right box - the "URL to your avatar" box, click the bullet point and then "Submit" at the end?

Works fine in the body text (as you've seen) but not as an avatar for some reason.

The avatars have to be less than 10kb, If you can trim it by 18kb, it will upload fine (cool avatar BTW)

Thanks for that.
Just to confirm though, I'm trying to link through to my avatar not upload it. Does the site upload from the referenced url anyway and if so, why offer the two options (upload and link)?

Still no joy I'm afraid.
When I click the "submit" button, the browser sits waiting for ybw.com/forums/changebasic.php.
Waits for about 60 seconds before returning a "Cannot display page" page.

If you check the properties of your avatar it gives the url address as http://www.ybw.com/forums/avatars/1164.jpg which would suggest that you have uploaded it to YBW, as opposed to linking to it to http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/davelawsonuk/small_skinny.gif . They are 2 seperate entities - the first is your avatar, the second is what you want as your avatar.

This would take seem to take us back to the question in my last post.

Mark,
thanks for your comments, I appreciate your interest.

Everything you say is correct but my problem lies in trying to change from my existing avatar (http://www.ybw.com/forums/avatars/1164.jpg) to my new one (http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/davelawsonuk/small_skinny.gif ).

To do this I need to go to >User Options and then click a radio button to say I want my avatar to be picked up from the new location which I specify in the box next to the radio button.
I then hit "submit" which should update my settings, however instead I get a 60 second delay before a "Cannot display page" message.

Ok. have you tried deleting your current avatar?

How about choosing "I no longer want to have an avatar", submit and then clear out your cache? Then, assuming it allows you to do that, try from scratch and link to you avatar.

If that doesn't work, we could then try reducing the size and than uploading it.
