Today a promising thread about "What Do You Look Like" has been spoiled by one and then another hugely oversize picture causing scroll bars to appear and the navigation buttons to slide off the edge of the screen.
The posters are probably not aware what will happen and may not realise what size the pics will appear.
But it doesn't half spoil the threads.
Is it possible to write a maximum pixel size into the software (in the same way as the 80x80 maximum for avatars) so that pics of more than, say, 750 pixels won't display?
Is this a reasonable idea?

Photobucket's size for message boards (640X480) fits the forum layout nicely and displays on 800x600 screens without scrolling being necessary. However although it works well for landscape orientation it is not so good for portrait orientation because the height is limited to 480 pixels so the width then becomes reduced to about 360 pixels, depending on the original picture proportions, making a rather small picture. So it is just the width taht needs limiting really.
I rather favour the use of clickable thumbnails. They take up minimal space on the page but can link to large pictures which open in a new window under control of the browser magnifier. It is also up to the reader whether he views the large pictures or not depending on his interest in them.
If you like cats you can click and view the full screen picture of the "black shadow" from next door. If you dont then you dont bother.

Establishing the size of an image is straighforward in php, you use the getimagesize command.
The problem is that if you checked the image size for every [img] tag for each new post then it would slow the forums down. In fact, this solution wouldn't be 100% foolproof because someone could replace the image (on the web) with a larger one once the validation had been passed.
Therefore you would really have to check every image size every time a page that contains images is displayed. This would be horrendous!

Clickable thumbnails work well. Continuing the cat theme, here's Tiger - sadly she died a week ago, aged 16. They do it at Christmas out of spite, I think.

Our cat, Fruity. A recent visitor enjoying some scraps put out for the birds. A little fellow who kept me company while I was "scrubbing the bottom" a few weeks ago.

Yes, yes, I get the drift
But
a) The people who don't realise their pics are too big are hardly likely to be able to post thumbnails. Even if they did they would probably be 2000 pixels wide.
b) It's a lot of fart-arseing about for people like me who don't use auto-resizing sites.
Petem's point about slowing down the forum is probably quite good. However only initial validation would be needed. I don't think we have many malicious wide-posters on here. It mostly happens through not realising either the picture size or the effect it has on the forum window.
