For the last 3 years my little speaker symbol;

has sat next to the time, bottom right hand corner so that I can easily play with volume and mute.
But recently it has disappeared every time I close down, and I have to go to "control panel" and play with sound bits to get it back.
I have been to task bar properties and selected "always show" without success.
Googled without success.
Any ideas?

It's a common problem, with no guaranteed fix. Kelly's Korner suggests this. Go to control panel, and get icon on task bar. Then go here http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm Scroll down to line 54, then go to the right hand side and click on and run save setting on exit.

Thanks for trying Brendan, it didn't work.
I've been messing about with new progs I suspect that its one of those thats fouled things up cos if I go back to a restore point I set 3 weeks ago all is well.
So I'll start again from that restore point and go by process of elimination. Damned nuisance as theres lots of stuff. (memo to self; dont mess with things you don't understand!)
PS That Photo shop express is a nice find if only as a long stop backup for pics. 2 Gb very useful, Puzzled as it says it's for the states only, I lied and it's working perfectly.

You're probably correct, a new progam is very often the cause, causing a conflict which is hard to resolve.

After messing about with progs and changes etc, to no great purpose went on another google and found what appears to be a solution;
Run
msconfig
Startup tab
Uncheck systray
restart
repeat but check systray
And touch wood me icon seems to be back!!! Well it's survived 6 turn offs.
Thanks for the steer in the right direction.
