floating debris
      #382588 - 28/07/2003 20:39

on a recent channel crossing I was quite horrified at the amount of floating debris in the English Channel - some of it large enough to do damage. Whilst motor sailing we took one 'hit' which caused heavy engine vibration. Under water inspection found an industrial strength black bag round the prop/shaft - no damage and easiely cut free. Much of the other debris seen would have been less forgiving.

Any recommendations for prevention - rope cutters for instance - do they work?

We have an Ambassader rope cutter and yes it is very good. On our previous boat the cutter took care of a 'plastic hessian' type sack, I think used by scallop fishermen, we picked it up in thick fog off Ushant with no wind and were very glad we had fitted the cutter.
