hello all I would appreciate some advice on the above subject. I am a bit thick when it comes to engines so please excuse. I have a Princess32 with twin volvo diesels. The forward/reverse controls are quite stiff to opertate particularly the reverse which are very stiff. They are OK when not in gear & I have run oil down the cables. What & where should I be looking at. I did say I was a bit thick when it comes to engines. Regards John

they will be stiff when the engines are not running although with the engine keys removed you will find that turning that having some one turning the props will help
dont lubricate the cables just clean up the ends and lightly lubricate the ends
if are they stiff when the engines are running there are several reasons
do you have single or dual station controls the controls may require to be cleaned and regreased the controls may be out of adjustment you may have worn cables or a bad bend or even to long a bendin the cable runs

thanks for the reply. I only have single station controls. They are stiff in reverse even when the engines are running & warmed up. They both click into idling OK but are then hard to move when trying for more revs. What do the cables move at the engine end when in gear? I havn't had the boat long & I don't know how much maintenance has gone on.

You probably need to replace the cables. Not a difficult job but the boat does need to be out of the water.

Last season was my first year with the boat & I believe she had very little useage over the previous few years. Yes they are outdrives. Does the boat need to be out of the water or not? Could the problem be the engine govenor levers sticking?

The levers should operate smootly and with little pressure being required. Many outdrives have their cables positioned under water, so any growth can affect the ends and make them jam. Corrosion is also possible. The engine govenor levers should not be causing a problem. They require very little pressure to operate.
Seems likely to me that the cables are past their best. If your going to take things apart to find the problem, you might as well fit new ones while your at it and then hopefully have years of trouble free use.
