I usually start my engines (2 x KAD32) very briefly following the services to the legs, just so I can be sure each leg goes into forward and reverse before I get back into the water. Useful this year as the stbd leg would not go into reverse and I was able to call the engineer back. But I have since been told that even a very very short time running the engine whilst out of the water can ruin the impellers. Does anyone else do this and can it really cause a problem?

Could you not attach a hose to the engine and start em that way. Easy enough on my old boat but then again it's got very good access to the engine.

We use ear muffs on the Bayliner and run water through the engines whilst on the hard after services and dewinterising etc, surely that would be the easiest route?
On land I'd never put the boat into gear though... just at idle.

It depends on how short a 'very very short time' is - and of course previous recommendations re.attaching a hose are correct. But the time required just to turn on one engine at a time, put it in fwd and rev and turn it off again is probably less than the time it takes for cooling water to reach the block after the boat has been on the hard, anyway. Therefore, 'no' is my short answer to your very last question. Btw, I didn't understand if hlb replied 'yes' to the same question or to the previous one of the same sentence...

Open the top of the raw water strainer and stick the hose in there and run the engine or use muffs as suggested. You should never run the impeller dry as it will quickly heat up with no water passing through.

well it was just at idle, knocking into gear did not increase speed, just showed that the props would turn. (or not in this case). Have tried muffs before worked well on my old OMC leg but did not seem to work too well on the Volvo 290 leg.

So long as it is a really short time. I packed a bit of vaseline aroung the impellor and then primed it from the raw water strainer. Ran it for less than 20 secs and no issues which should suit your requirements. A lift in and out is much more expensive than a 20second test!

just run them in a big buket of water, without props on your safe to engage gear each way
