As anyone ever used acetone to remove grease and grime from their boat before polishing? Or can anyone recommend any other material for the job?

Be very careful using acetone for cleaning, it can make the gel coat go sticky. Best to stick to traditional cleaners and degreasers. I've generally found automotive products to be best. And Wessex do a very good fibre glass cleaning 2 part product
Wessex
And Yachtarts in Plymouth have an excellent concentrated cleaner on sale for £1 for 1/2 litre. It works extremely well.

I use acetone and have never had any stickiness. Acetone is readily sold by fibreglass suppliers, so I assume the two are compatible.

Yes acetone is used for cleaning fibreglass prior to repairs or alterations being made. But I still wouldn't want to use it for cleaning gelcoat which is quite different to fibreglass. But if it works for you that's great. I used it some years on a Boston Whaler where the gelcoat was damaged and it did on that occasion cause the surrounding gel to go temporarily sticky.
