Prop antifoul (or not)
      #1908489 - 26/06/2008 15:52

My boat is out for antifouling at the moment, what should I do to treat the props, I see the details of Propshield on the internet, but can find few comments from previous users.

22 inch props on a 40 foot Sea Ray

Any comments appreciated.

Just slap on a load of waterproof grease all over them. Castrol do one, can't remember the name of it though, will be in chandlers tho

I used propshield in jan, last week the props were still spotless, but must be applied with heat to penetrate the metal.

I applied propshield to props, trim tabs and drives last October.

I usually get to the boat once every two weeks. Each time I examine the props, there is a slight trace of thin, 'weedy' weed.

Then we go out, and once back at the pontoon, take another look at the props. They've been spotless every time.

Point is, I imagined propshield would be too 'slippy' to allow any growth at all. Not so. But what growth there is appears to struggle to gain any purchase of note and simply disappears as the boat is used. I'm sufficiently impressed and will use propshield again.

Oh - and I didn't heat the props before applying - I used Plan B - thin the first application propshield down with white spirit, then slap the second coat straight on top.

I am told that heat is slightly more effective than spirit, but maybe so little difference as to be unnoticeable. Last year we used one of the normal paints, but this is definitely far more effective.

It was a bit messy to apply like that, but it was painless for me. SWMBO applied both coats !

As we have managed one trip so far this season (Sovereign Harbour to Yarmouth Old Gaffers). I'm thinking of antifouling the whole bleeping thing this year!!! When will us working mobos have a weekend of fun?
Bad season.
Is there an oracle out there that can let me know if I should stay with my original plan to cruise N France for three weeks from 5th July, or should I bite the bullet, pay Gordo et al loads of airport tax to fly off to a proper holiday. SWMBO is getting tetchy! HELP.
