What are your thoughts, anyone done it? Propane is easy to buy and safe.
Just google "Propane Diesel" there are hundreds this is from one manufacturer.

When propane is used properly, it will keep your engine cleaner with less carbon buildup and cleaner oil. Propane is a high-octane fuel and burns slower and longer therefore, propane will help diesel burn more thoroughly, increasing power and torque. With propane your engine should last longer, get better fuel economy and have significantly more power.
By fumigating the intake air with propane, there are dramatic increases in power, torque and diesel mileage. By using a dual stage regulator and drawing vapor from the tank, this system creates one of the most user friendly, maintenance free systems available. With this system, exhaust temperatures are only slightly increased and in many cases decreased. This converts to one of the safest horsepower increases on the market. The vapors are drawn from the top of the tank so there is no liquid to vapor converts to worry about, which makes one less problem to have. This system can be adapted on any turbocharged diesel and is easily transferred from vehicle to vehicle."
This kit is $700USD, the propane is introduced into the turbo via a simple regulator. All you need next is a Propane bottle and Hey Presto!

Sounds good, but doesn't increased horsepower mean increased strain on the engine?

If it was that good wouldn't Volvo etc already do this??
There will be a catch of some discription, extra stress on the engine, reliability issues or something else

Yes it will add more stress of course. But when you think the old Volvo AD41 which started off as a fairly unstressed 200HP engine and over the years Volvo ended up getting more and more horsepower out of it by adding bolt on superchargers, intercoolers etc eventually 265HP (Kad 300) out of the same old basic block. I think reasonable power gains are safe? Even the D6 is gradually becoming a more and more stressed member what are they up to now 350, look at the D4?

Perhaps there is some law about Propane as a fuel? Propane is normally for heating, cooking etc so will have a different VAT and duty rate so perhaps it can't be used as a fuel? That is my guess why Volvo and other manufacturers don't use it.

Isn't Propane just LPG? If so it's already available as a fuel for petrol engined boats and cars

Errrm, yes. Those higher end blocks might be the same bottom end (boring bit) but different cylinder heads (interesting bit).
Feel free to try it out. Picking the pieces of piston and con-rod out of the bilge will keep Col out of mischief for a bit 
Anyway, why mess around with propane when you can go NITRO

Propane gets added to the diesel to make the diesel burn more efficiently. LPG engines run entirely on LPG or Petrol, ok they start on petrol and change over to LPG but do not run on a cocktail of the two.

Maybe because "Boat Pull" isn't recognised anywhere yet, but Truck Pull is?
