      #793057 - 31/07/2005 23:08

whether anyone can give me an idea of the cruising costs that i will have, fuel etc. it has twin petrol mercurydrives putting out 135hp each. I was wondering what a couple of hours crising would cost me. My wife and I are completely new to this but are looking forward to the challange. Any suggestions are really appreciated

Lots is the short answer. Having owned a single perol engined Sealine I learnt that old petrol engines guzzle fuel at an alarming rate. I'm guessing the 255 you're looking at is about 15 years old and carburettored. At a cruise I'd guesstimate a fuel burn of 12-16 gallons per hour in total, which at current prices is £50-70/hr.

BTW, you have had engine surveys done...?

thanks for that...should we looking at something else then? we are about to spend circa £20k and all reasonable diesels seem to be out of our reach.

If you are looking at 20K then diesel will be out of your range. I think the estimate of running cost given is a bit high IMHO as I have a single V8 210hp and mine drinks about 8-10GPH cruising at 23kn so about £40/hour. Twin 135s shouldn't drink much more than 5gph each if you play sensibly. If you floor it, then you will need a tanker following you. I am currently looking at a boat with twin 150s in and the fuel calcs work out about the same as my V8. Nearest diesel equivalent is 20K more to buy.

As was also suggested, get the engines checked out properly if you can't do it yourself.

JH

Nowt wrong with the 255s, and being on my second Sealine I rate them, but I've moved to diesel and won't ever go back to petrol. Diesel safer, more reliable and much cheaper to run, but as you say much more expensive to buy, and £20k won't get you into one. For your budget you'll have to go petrol, but don't get caught out like I did... get engine surveys done! Petrol engines and a sea water environment don't really mix, and after a decade and a half, there could be all sorts of hidden probems that'll cost a fortune to fix.

Thanks for the advice. We are really confused as to what to do. We really want to get a motor boat but do intend using it as much as possible. We only live just over an hour from Southampton so would like to get on to it at least 3 weekends out of the month but £40 per hour fuel cost could make this prohibitive. I'll see if I can see any diesel engined boats for sale.

Looking at the pics it certainly looks like a superb motorboat but unfortunately out of our budget. Thanks anyway

We have a twin 135hp mercruiser set up on our 255 used mostly for river cruising, where we use one engine and burn less than a gallon an hour, cruising at about 18 knts we use about 9 gallons an hour, for a 255 I would say petrols were the right engines, quite and no nasty diesel smoke hanging over the cockpit, happy to potter along at tickover for extended periods of time and nice and light when you want to make it fly. diesel derogation has gone from November so there is no benifit in cost of running to owning a diesel version. Have just bought a new boat a Sealine 310 statesman and guess what that has in it, twin V6 petrols.
