I've just registered with Ofcom to be able to update my details on-line, rather than having to post them a form everytime. Seems like an obvious service really. The thing is, having filled in the on-line registration form and selected a password, Im told - details (presumably my username, as I wasn't asked to select one) will be sent to me by snail-mail within 5 days Don't they have email

They do, but they want to make sure that you have got an address - lots of other threads about this already.

They know I have an address because its the one they already sent my license to

they need to verify your online address to your real world one. You'd be pretty unhappy if someone signed up online and stole your address from you? At present they have no way to connect online and real world addresses, which is what they are doing.

But they won't know it is really you unless you let them send something to your address again

it's like banging your head against a brick wall sometimes isn't it. People pop onto the forums complaing about how easy online fraud is, and post all sorts of examples.
Then when a govt dept acts responsibly, you get loads of complaints about the difficulty

Umm on a good note - I did this and despite the 5 day wait had my details sent through and all is as smooth as a babies bum .. not that I needed to update my details (I do have a real address aparently as well whooohoooo) - before I got my details though my permanent license popped through my door again whoohoooo ...
My only dissapointment is that the new license is an A4 sheet with my details that I need to keep with the radio on board so nothing to show in my window!! unless of course I tape the A4 paper into the window instead - and I liked my little round car tax type disc tooo
Oh well ..... we move on
