vibrations
      #1854907 - 11/05/2008 21:37

Hi guys, new to this ! Have started with the Doral early March, running out of the Mersea quarters on the Blackwater. Everything going swimmingly and the wife and I have just had a fantastic weekend on the boat. However, have noticed recently that with the trim leg up in beach mode, there is a slight vibration. Is this normal ? Also, on starting the engine sometimes the steering wheel twitches when the boat is in neutral, just for a couple of seconds - is this normal ? Any pointers on what this could be ? The boat is running a gas volvo penta and a dp out drive. Thanks for any input. Will try and post pics of said fantastic weekend sometime soon.

Welcome....hopefully you will find this the right place for relevant info...

Are you running in beach mode?
I hope not for long as the prop is probably out of the water...which may restrict the water inlet for the cooling...
the vibration may be from cavitation because you are in beach mode.
trim should be 0 (zero) to start then only a few degrees plus or minus

I changed it cos it was too long....to drink and in letters :-)

Thanks, just run it a few degrees up in shallow water, to be on the safe side.... your comments seem to make sence, (cavitation) etc........... was thinking gimball bearing or something horrid like that!!!!!!!!!!

I'm not saying I'm right but I have never had to run the legs in beach mode...IIRC it should only be done in neutral
my legs come up to 50 deg so i can inspect the props out of the water....

might be worth getting the bearings checked if you get vibration in "normal" running.....oh and assuming theres no bits out of the props

I had a similar set up on a Four Winns, I used to drive the boat onto the trailer in beach mode. I discovered that after 4 or 5 recoverys, the gimble bearing was munched ! (On certain slipways I needed to be quite agressive with the throttle.)

I would get the bearing and bellows checked and try not to power the leg while its up. Sorry, dont know about the twitchy wheel.

It is not good to run the engine when the leg is up as the shaft is still turning even though you are not in gear, this can can cause possible damage and a big no no on certain makes (volvo). As to the vibration when the wheel is turned, this sounds like your hydrolic steering pump and believe this to be ok although the fan belt may slip and start squeaking. You can hear this slight rubbing sound on your car if you turn the wheel to one side(the pump is working hard) hope this helps.
