I have the eagle fishmark 320 fishfinder and have installed it as it says to in the book.I cannot distinguish anything unless I have the fish ID on.The full screen is just pure clutter and no visible arches,When the fish id is put on,it shows fish,it is quite accurate as I have put it on over areas I know to be black with fish. Is this normal? Is it just picking up silt and debris floating about in the under tow,or is it picking up the under tow its self?

If the fish are as numerous as you say then there will be no arches, just a large mass of blobs as here.

arches are made by a single fish entering your cone and leaving your cone, as shown here
individual fish may appear as such

if you are getting a good bottom return then that's about all you can expect. When you use the fish I.D. it shows returns that are greatly enhanced and not always truthful.

Also try reducing the surface clutter and the gain, try to get a clear picture between surface and bottom, the best way to do this is set the range manually at twice the depth of the water you are in, and adjust the gain so that you see a second bottom line i.e. 30ft known depth, show two bottom lines one at 30 and another at 60., if you set the range at 90, you only want the 30 and 60 to show.
